"The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic competitiveness."The Gilman Scholarship is a prestigious program for students who are traveling to (mostly) developing countries. While in Bulgaria, I conducted research on the differences in English language learning in American elementary schools and Bulgarian elementary schools. I also took a particular interest in Roma (gypsy) students and their educational experiences in Bulgaria. In addition, I also piloted a pen pal program between a fifth grade classroom in Bulgaria and a 4th grade classroom in Montana. I also studied the Bulgarian language and participated in a number of student programs such as tutoring, acting in the spring play, organizing the USA booth and the international food and culture day, and more.
