Executive Director
Current
Senior Research Scholar
My evidence-based policy research on the just and efficient energy transition in developing countries provides practical solutions to governments and corporates. I created and lead the India Program that answers critical questions on energy transition issues facing policymakers in India. My analysis of strategic choices made by OPEC members to minimize risks to their market share and oil revenues informs policy choices of decision makers globally. I spearheaded three ‘Columbia India Energy Dialogues’ and seven workshops on topics such as oil market volatility, geopolitical impacts on energy transition, and DEI in energy, receiving praise and high-level participation from CEOs, Cabinet level from Indian government, senior diplomats, and sector experts. I curated two oversubscribed student roundtables on clean energy transitions.
Program Director And Research Fellow
Starting as a Research Fellow and promoted to Program Director after a year, I supervised a high impact team of 11 analysts working on global market analysis for oil, natural gas, hydrogen, and petrochemicals. I led KAPSARC’s engagement as a trusted advisor to the leadership of Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Energy on options to diversify crude export markets, development of Saudi led downstream capacities globally, increasing the share of natural gas and renewables in the national energy mix, and implications of the COVID pandemic on oil market volatility, among other issues. I was appointed Committee Member to the Saudi Ministry of Energy’s Integrated Energy Strategy workstream on Oil and Gas to advise the national leadership on achieving global preeminence in a sustainable energy future. I also scoped and designed as the Program Lead, the first ever Energy Innovation Program at the Ministry of Energy; built a network of national energy companies, universities, and thinktanks to promote energy innovation actions.
Lead Economist (Power, Renewables And Carbon), Group Economics
Led the power, renewables, and carbon workstreams in Group Economics, supporting the development of long term perspectives on transitions towards a lower carbon global energy system in the company, including assessing and forecasting the growth in renewables and other non-fossil fuels, and decarbonization of the power sector. I also revamped the CO2 emissions methodology in the team to align with the IPCC’s approach for National Communications.
Head, Gas Analysis, Group Economics
Led gas market analytics team of three analysts producing bi-monthly gas market outlooks and setting planning assumptions for the company’s investment and trading decisions. I led the gas sections of the Statistical Review of World Energy and Energy Outlook.
Director
Joined IDFC as a Vice President, Policy Group and was promoted to Director in a year. I introduced the company to sectors at the frontier of infrastructure financing, such as decentralized electricity services in rural areas and organized intermediate public transport systems in small towns, using market and regulatory analysis focusing on investment potential. My analytical rigour was key in generating interest amongst various investment streams at IDFC as also the company’s ability for public advocacy with national and international agencies on energy, transport and climate change issues.
Director (Mba Programmes), Teri University And Associate Professor, Department Of Policy Studies
Responsible for the pedagogy, instructional design, quality of delivery, and overall academic leadership and management for two MBA programs. I got approval for both these programs from the Academic Council of TERI University and University Grants Commission (UGC is the apex approving body for course content in India) within 3 months. The student strength increased from less than 10 students to 50 students within a year of the launch of these two programmes with intensive outreach of the unique proposition of the programs to corporate and public sector employers. I was also teaching Applied Econometrics and Regulatory Economics with consistently highest internal ratings as well as the student scores in both the courses.
Area Convenor, Urban And Transport, The Energy And Resources Institute
Joined TERI as a Research Associate and went on to head the research group on urban and transport systems. As Area Convenor of the Urban and Transport group in TERI, I defined and operationalized the research agenda for the management of sustainable urban infrastructure and transport systems including obtaining funding for research activities and consulting projects from governments and multilateral organizations. I also oversaw their execution including delivery to clients and dissemination activities.
