About Kavan Ann Smith

I never wanted to be an electrician. My first job was as a liftie on the North Shore of Vancouver & I fell in love with the ski industry immediately. I returned season after season, mostly to swing chairs but I also taught a bit of snowboarding and slung some pints in Seymour's pub. I reluctantly left the mountains to get a 'real job', and moved to Ottawa to go to Carleton University for my B.A. in English Literature. I went on to get my C.E.L.T.A. with the goal of teaching English overseas and had the opportunity to teach in Seoul, Korea and London, England before returning home to Vancouver for, what I thought, was a short stint in my home city before my next international adventure. I was planning that adventure when the North Shore mountains had an epic year and it wasn't long before I called up my old boss and got a job driving big yellow machines clearing snow. That job wasn't for me but I knew I wanted to be in the mountains and that made it obvious I needed a trade that would keep me there and pay a living wage. That winter I enrolled in an electrical E.L.T.T. program in Mackenzie BC, the only public institution without a waiting list. I apprenticed and earned my RSE in the ski industry, attending BCIT and Selkirk College for my subsequent schooling, and, since then, have worked in the belly of BC Ferries and at the top of a 50' highline, climbed trees to install ski slope lighting, rappelled off of chairlifts and rowed out to a fountain in the middle of a duck pond to troubleshoot a water feature. I've worked with 75 year-olds that could run laps around me and learned trade tricks from green apprentices. This trade is so vast and there is always something new. I ended up leaving the mountains but I now know that the only reason I never wanted to be an electrician was because I didn't know the places it could take me. One of those places is back in front of a classroom; one of my favourite discoveries about trades is the mentorship aspect built in to them. These skills were originally taught, mentor to apprentice and there is, still, that relationship woven in to the fabric of these careers. I am very excited to be able to help people realize, oh, the places they can go!

Listed skills include Electricity, Wiring, Electricians, Blueprint Reading, and 18 others.
