About me:A "Choice Theory*" leader (8+ years), a team builder, and a medical device designer (20+ years) who canbring an idea of a medical device into a working prototype and then into production, while meeting allthe applicable IEC medical device safety standards and the regional regulatory requirements (Health Canada, USA (FDA), Europe (MDD/MDR), and Australia (TGA)). I can manage the whole operation of the product life cycle from design and development to the customer service according to ISO 13485:2016 quality system, MDSAP program, and European MDD/MDR.I have successfully received approvals from Health Canada, and FDA for Class II and Class III Medical devices as well as European CE mark for Class IIa and Class IIb Medical devices. Director Of EngineeringMeditech International Inc. Sep 2016 - Aug 2023Toronto, Canada AreaLeading the team of professionals in electronics and intelligent system designs and development, production, supply chain management, shipping/receiving, customer service, Quality assurance and regulatory affairs per ISO13485:2016 quality management system and MDSAP program. -
Chief Electronics EngineerMeditech International Inc. Apr 2014 - Aug 2023415 Horner A● Accountable for design & development of next generation of professional laser therapy system. The new device has been designed with usability in mind to increase performance and minimize user errors.● Designed & Developed an affordable consumer-grade laser therapy system:○ Replaced the traditional menu-driven user interface with a new, simplified, and intuitive user interface design:○ BioFlex Personal 120 (more information at: https://bioflexwave.com/shop/therapeutic-systems/bioflex-p120-personal-therapy-system/) ○ BioFlex Personal 180 (more information at: https://bioflexwave.com/shop/therapeutic-systems/bioflex-p180-personal-therapy-system/)● Technical team leader. Mentored and supervised technicians and engineers. -
Electronic System DesignerMeditech International Inc. Oct 2011 - Apr 2014● New DUO+ Treatment Array: Completely designed, developed and prototyped the electronics for a brand new product for Laser Therapy in less than 3 months. This new product is called DUO+, a 2-in-1 treatment array, which is backward compatible with Meditech Professional Laser therapy system. It runs much cooler, more reliable, and the treatment energy is more precisely controlled (this product passed the UL safety testing (IEC60601-1 3rd edition) in the first submission).● Enhanced the hardware and developed firmware for Meditech Therapist Laser therapy system to support DUO+ treatment head.● New Red Laser Probe design: Completely designed a new Laser probe from scratch and made sure the new probe was backward compatible with older systems in the field. The new Laser probe is on the market since December 2012 with 0% Laser diode failure.● Reviewed, tested, troubleshot, and helped a 3rd party design company that was already working on a Laser therapy system for Meditech. Took over the design to enhance, and Improved the PCB designs of the system for EMC testing at a local test house.● Improved the designs of already great products to make sure they work more reliably in the field.● Supported the service and production departments with NCRs and RMAs. -
Research Phd StudentToronto Rehabilitation Institute - Idapt Sep 2006 - Sep 2011● Developed a novel and patented algorithm and technology to identify nursing activities to estimate the risk of infection transfer during nursing procedures. This technology was a part of a system to fight hospital acquired infections.○ Shadowed nurses and doctors in hospitals to understand their movements and habits to identify the mechanism of infection transfer in hospital environment.○ Designed a study and proposed it as a PhD thesis. Performed the data collection and analysis and published the results as journal papers.● Recipient of Toronto Rehab Tech Team Excellence Award ($2000) in November 2008.● I arranged a multidisciplinary team of nursing, and geography doctoral students and conducted a side study to simulate infection transfer.● Helped students and other researchers with their digital signal processing problems, and electronics designs. -
Research Electrical EngineerHolland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Sep 2005 - Sep 2006Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital● Further development on Prosthetic Upper Extremity Functional Index (PUFI) software (MS Access & VBA). Added a new module called UFI that analyzed data for people with disability who did not use their prostheses. The software is now internationally used by research centres.● Resolved issues on MyoWizard and MyoAssistant software that was written in Visual Basic to program prosthetic hands. This job was a request from Otto Bock Canada.● Designed and added a wireless module to prosthetic controllers to enable the controllers be programmed wirelessly.● Designed and developed a new controller for brushless DC motors to be used in a new prosthetic hand. The new motors allowed lighter designs of prosthetic hands. -
Research AssistantHolland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Jan 2002 - Sep 2005Bloorview Kids Rehab● Master’s thesis: By studying the weaknesses of the current motorized artificial hands, which require tedious user training, I designed, developed, and patented a novel algorithm to automatically classify different forearm movements in real-time by investigating forearm muscle signals. Unlike traditional approaches, which require weeks or even months of user training, in my algorithm the user randomly performs any self-selected intentional movements. After two minutes of data collection, the algorithm automatically identifies the most repeatable movements that user can generate. These movements then will be mapped to any functions, such as controller signals for a motorized artificial hand, which makes operating of these devices very intuitive to the user.● Developed and added further functions to “Virtual Music Instrument” software. Having usability in mind for children with disabilities, this software was designed to translate body movements into musical notes to enable children with physical disabilities play music. My version of the software was nationally broadcast on CTV in November 2002. The video of my work can be seen here: (http://youtu.be/To-HUIsdQfk. ● Designed and developed an improved control system (hardware and software) for an “ankle dynamometer”. This ankle dynamometer was used at Toronto Rehabilitation Institute. This machine determined the amount of muscle stiffness (spasticity) in adults with spinal cord injury.● Designed and developed a compact sensor to send muscle signals to an environmental switch wirelessly.● Designed and developed an improved control system for a new “Spasticity Measurement Machine” and an “ankle dynamometer”.
