Kavitha has been a journalist for 21 years, focusing her reportage on those living on the margins - slum dwellers, small farmers, indigenous communities, landless labourers and women. Her first book Landscapes Of Loss: The Story of an Indian Drought (HarperCollins India) was published in February 2021. A deeply reported work on cyclical drought and socio-economic distress in central India, the book features a foreword by Magsaysay awardee P Sainath.She is a fellow of the Logan Nonfiction Program (Fall 2021), a grantee of the Earth Journalism Network (2020) and the Thakur Foundation (2020, 2021). Kavitha is working on her second book, to be published in 2022 by HarperCollins. She is also editor of 26/11 Stories Of Strength (Penguin Random House, 2018), a book by The Indian Express group published to mark 10 years of the Mumbai terror attacks. It is a compilation of 10 long-form narratives on how survivors rebuilt their lives, responding to grief with resilience.
