I contribute reporting and cover breaking news events as needed for the New York Times. I provided ongoing reporting from the battleground state of Wisconsin for The New York Times during and after the 2020 presidential election. Other stories I've covered for the New York Times include protests over COVID-19 safer-at-home orders, a mass shooting, racial unrest in Milwaukee following a police shooting; the subsequent criminal trial of the officer, which made groundbreaking use of body camera footage; the exit by Gov. Scott Walker from the 2016 presidential race and reported sightings of a lion loose in Milwaukee neighborhoods.

I do occasional stringing for the Washington Post on breaking news stories and am a regular contributor to the Capital Weather Gang/Climate and Environment team, focusing on social and diversity issues. I do research and reporting for CQ Researcher (formerly Congressional Quarterly), which provides in-depth, professionally fact-checked reports for universities on today's top news topics. My most recent report is on poverty in the United States, which persists long after the Great Recession. It explores current political debates over increasing the existing work mandates to receive food stamps, proposals to force Medicaid recipients to work and debate over raising the minimum wage. Two sidebars explore how natural disasters affect poverty and the high risk for middle-aged Americans to fall into poverty after job loss.My previous report was on foster care: How the opioid crisis, children fleeing nations in turmoil and public outcry toward abuse has contributed to a shortage of foster homes; how the newly enacted Family First Prevention Services Act changes the nation's focus to prevention; how trauma and neglect causes lifelong developmental and emotional changes in children.

I identify timely news and business topics of interest to national and global readers and do in-depth reporting and writing for the seven-time Pulitzer Prize-winning Christian Science Monitor, which publishes a daily online news site, as well as a weekly print magazine. This involves interviewing multiple Women of Worth finalists, researching their volunteer work and relevant community/background data, as well as interviewing several people affected by each candidate’s work. These thorough and compelling write-ups help judges choose the winners for this prestigious award and prizes; the inspirational stories are later published online.

Edited both national and local news for the Pulitzer prize-winning Milwaukee Journal Sentinel print newspaper and its online website, JSOnline.com. Worked with reporters to ensure balance, thoroughness and clarity of writing. Worked as lead copy editor on special reports and investigative projects. Checked archives to ensure historical accuracy and identify current news angles and updates. Worked with news editors, photographers, artists, page designers and online producers to coordinate overall package presentation. Did thorough fact-checking and corrected stories for spelling, grammar, punctuation, math accuracy and news style. Wrote accurate and compelling headlines and photo captions.Summarized daily news stories for teasers, skyboxes and index boxes to help draw readers to the print sections, and wrote digital summaries for online stories. I also compiled each day's top stories and wrote and recorded a daily news podcast until that product was discontinued.

I covered government and education on deadline in more than 40 communities and 14 school districts throughout Milwaukee, Waukesha, Washington and Ozaukee counties, for Pulitzer Prize-winning metro daily. I proactively alerted editors to breaking news and follow-up stories, and generated enterprise stories for Page 1 of the Metro news section, as well as Page 1 stories for the Sunday Real Estate section.

I edited daily stories by 13 staff reporters, as well as a number of correspondents. I edited several breaking news stories daily that were submitted within hours of deadline, while simultaneously completing the page design, copy editing and headline writing for Page 1A and Page 1B. I worked with reporters to develop story ideas and content and with editors to develop budgets and determine page placement and accompanying art. As a regular weekend night editor, I was responsible for the entire local section for the Saturday and Sunday morning editions -- assigning and editing stories by weekend reporters, and designing pages.
