Kay Walsh is the managing director of Nova Economics, a specialist economic and strategy consultancy. Prior to founding Nova Economics, she led the economics advisory team within the strategy practice at Deloitte Consulting South Africa. Kay has over 15 years’ experience working as an economist in the consulting and investment banking industries. She has focused on the analysis of economic policy and regulation, market analysis, corporate strategy development, cost-benefit analysis and econometric modelling. She produced an economic appraisal of two proposed hydroelectric plants in Malaysia for the national utility – Tenega Nasional Berhad.Kay obtained a master’s degree in economics (cum laude) in 2004. I was seconded to the School of Development Studies, UKZN for a fixed term from April to July 2006 to work on a project in conjunction with TIPS for the Department of Trade and Industry to assist them in developing South Africa’s offer at the upcoming World Trade Organisation negotiations on the General Agreement on Trade in Services. The report included a review of progress in the GATS negotiations to date and a summary of the barriers faced by South African companies when expanding their services abroad as well as extensive data analysis and case study material.
