The unit serviced both the external corporate and institutional clients of the bank and internal clients including those within the Firstrand group. My responsibilities included maintaining and distributing the banks macroeconomic forecasts (Inflation, GDP, currencies, interest rates, unemployment rate etc.), producing regular research notes, market commentary (eg. daily currency report) and data responses, economic modelling and forecasting which we distribute to a subscription list of approximately 4000 internal and external clients. The unit’s primary client was an internal division – Fixed Income, Currency and Commodities (FICC) to whom I consulted regularly, providing research, daily updates and weekly presentations. I regularly accompany various FICC sales people on visits to large corporate clients to provide an economic backdrop to their product pitches. Some of my project experience whilst working there:Contracted by Transnet, as a member of team of consultants from GMA and UKZN to develop and update container and commodity cargo forecasts (using methods from my masters research) for all the ports of South Africa as part of a wider project headed by engineering firm Prestidge Retief Dresner and Wijnberg to update Transnet’s current national port masterplan.I was part of a team of economists who wrote an economic review of the greater eThekwini metropolitan economy in 2006. The report was commissioned by the Economic Development Division of the municipality and covers the structure of the Metropolitan economy, industry performance and outlook, services and delivery, the state of education and health and further challenges. I was seconded to the School of Development Studies, UKZN for a fixed term from April to July 2006 to work on a project in conjunction with TIPS for the Department of Trade and Industry to assist them in developing South Africa’s offer at the upcoming World Trade Organisation negotiations on the General Agreement on Trade in Services. The report included a review of progress in the GATS negotiations to date and a summary of the barriers faced by South African companies when expanding their services abroad as well as extensive data analysis and case study material.
