About Kay Bernard

If you're looking for someone with equal acumen in field work and computer analysis, someone who can draft and enact a research project start to finish, someone with a passion for environmental health from microbes to mammals, and who can manage a team with equal parts involvement and delegation, look no further! My name is Kay Bernard, and I am a graduate student pursuing a Ph.D. in Ecological Engineering at the one and only The™ Ohio State University. I have extensive research experience in data management and curation, field maintenance of research sites fitted with Teledyne ISCO sampling equipment, and evaluation of bioretention cell performance as a leader on the Blueprint Columbus Project since 2019. My research centers around rain garden soil performance on a sewershed scale, specifically as they relate to soil design characteristics and microbial community composition. I recently published a paper titled Detection of SARS-CoV-2 in urban stormwater: An environmental reservoir and potential interface between human and animal sources the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in stormwater in The Science of the Total Environment. I am passionate about sustainable solutions to rising urban stormwater runoff especially utilizing green infrastructure.Previously, I completed my undergraduate degree with a B.S. in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at The University of Arizona. Here, I was an experienced Head Teaching Assistant with a demonstrated history of working the higher education in both a private and public capacity. While pursuing a minor in Computer Science, I became skilled in programming languages Python, Java, MATLAB, and R. My undergraduate research experience includes extensive microscopy, wet lab procedures, modeling, statistics, and data management. My love of math led to me to minor in Mathematics which I used to tutor those struggling with math from elementary school to college. This minor also helped me serve as a teacher aid in AmeriCorps for two years in Tucson schools, a position which sparked a passion for community service and advocacy for historically underfunded and underserved communities. In the near future, I hope to complete my Ph.D. in Ecological Engineering and use this degree and my passion for community resources to work for a governmental agency that leads environmental restoration projects. I would love to someday hold an office in local government so I can focus on serving my local community. My love of learning will be lifelong, so you can find me enrolled in some kind class or reading a book to supplement a new skill.
