In my early 30s, I was working at a great firm getting great experience, but my life was out of control. Working 100 hour weeks. Travelling all over the place. Missing family events. It was stressful and exhausting. I couldn't take it much longer. The stress would have pushed me over the edge.My family hated my job. I missed parties, and weddings (yes, even my brother in law's wedding) and forgot about social events / birthdays / dinners...I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life. How would I see my family grow up, see my friends and yet still achieve everything I wanted to in my career?A coffee with some mates in 2007 changed everything.We fantasised about leaving our jobs and setting up our own business on our terms. A crazy idea that seemed impossible but I couldn't let go of the idea. I was 34 years old.I resigned from my job. Walked away from a life-changing amount of money and spent 2 years broke, with no income, trying to get our business off the ground.Eventually, after more than 200 investor meetings in all corners of the globe, we raised £220 million for our Fund and our business came alive.We grew to a dedicated team of 10 people and successfully ran that business for 10 years until I retired at the age of 41.Over the past 30 years, I've learned a few things:- Masters Degree in Psychology from Cambridge University- Worked in Private Equity for 10 years for one of the global leaders- Set up my own Private Equity business (with two mates) and ran it for 10 years- Retired at 41 to travel the world, spend time with my family and have more fun- Second Masters Degree in Sport Psychology from St. Mary's UniversityI now use my skills and experience to advise Founders and CEOs how to become better leaders.
