I am currently processing human nasopharyngeal samples testing for SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19). I was thankfully working for the Entomology Lab in the Canadian Food Inspection Agency as a placement student when the call went out for Laboratory Support Technicians and Laboratory Analysts for the Federal Surge Laboratory. I started off as an EG-02 Laboratory support technician, after 5 months and a competition I became an EG-04 Laboratory Analyst. I was able to assist in the set-up of a new lab, meaning I helped create inventories for chemicals and equipment, I verified a multitude of pipettes on a variety of tips, I was responsible for placing orders and maintaining an access database. Since October 2020 in the Federal Surge Lab I have been able to gain experience extracting RNA, making mastermix, processing samples using RT-qPCR, and analysing the results. I just completed in the Biotechnology Advanced Diploma program at Fleming College. Throughout my post-secondary career, I have accumulated over 500 in-lab hours on top of a 4 month (600 in-lab hour) placement/internship. The in-lab experience has allowed me to gain an excellent understanding of lab safety, SOP’s, aseptic techniques, and data analysis. I have experience working with laboratory equipment such as pipettes, microscopes, spectrophotometers, Quant Studios etc. Over four of my years in college, I’ve held the role of student advisor/class representative. My role was to advocate on behalf of my fellow students to promote enhancements and changes within the college. Therefore, I have not only developed excellent laboratory skills but built strong leadership skills, demonstrating my initiative to help and improve the environment around me.During my previous work experiences, I had the chance to develop my communication skills with coworkers and customers/clients. I can work well in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to think quickly on my feet. I enjoy working independently or with smaller groups. I have also developed the ability to work alongside many people from a variety of different backgrounds. My main two hobbies outside of work are artsy things (such as watercolour or acrylic painting and crocheting) and playing D&D with close friends.During my time in college, I realized that I really enjoy the practical lab component of the courses. I equally enjoyed working in the Microbiology, Molecular Biology and DNA labs. My end goal would be to work in a diagnostic laboratory setting, perhaps food or plant testing, as I have a genuine passion for public health safety.
