About Kayla Elder
Since February of 2023, I’ve worked as a technical writer for National Instruments. During that time, I have been a part of several documentation releases. One of my favorite active projects is authoring content for a release of an Electronic Control Unit Test System. As part of this release, I’m creating a documentation set that consists of a user manual, specifications, a maintenance software manual, and safety/regulatory documents. I am learning about the offering through collaboration with subject matter experts and using what I learn to author new, user-oriented topics in Oxygen XML. I’m organizing content according to our customers’ workflow and applying metadata to make content easy to find. This project has been a learning curve, but I'm grateful to have the opportunity to grow my skillset in a variety of directions.My work at NI has solidified my conviction that technical writing is the field I can best apply my strengths. However, I’ve traveled an interesting path to arrive at that conviction. Today, I am a technical writer. Yesterday, I was a medical professional (alright, not literally yesterday, but you know what I mean).As a nurse, I had no idea that learning to chart would translate to the ability to document minute details. As a clinical trial monitor, I didn’t know that writing reports describing a research site’s SOPs would help me write process manuals. Yet here I am—working as a technical writer for a test and measurement engineering company, building on skills I first learned in the medical industry. Working in the medical industry was a blessing, and I’m excited to continue to see how I can apply the skills I learned years ago to a new field.
