Profile bio

About Kayla Hower, Mph

My background in community social services has afforded me a profound understanding of the challenges individuals encounter when interacting with the U.S. healthcare system, including fear of medical visits, financial burden of seeking care, navigating and understanding medical insurance, health literacy and the stigma associated with specific health conditions. This background propels my aspiration to dive deeper into healthcare, where I aim to deliver compassionate care, education, support and advocate for policy and process improvements.Through my experience in social services, I have honed my ability to collaborate within families and communities, advocating for improved health outcomes and empowering individuals to navigate complex healthcare systems. My goal is to advocate for patients, ensuring they receive dignified care that respects their autonomy and helps them to reach the care outcome that they desire, and provides them the best quality of life possible. My primary areas of interest are community health, behavioral health, substance use disorders, palliative care, gerontology and chronic disease management.Looking forward, I would like to seek a Master’s of Social Work degree and then pursue a Ph.D. program. Another long-term goal is serving as an Aging and Health Policy Fellow through the John A. Hartford foundation. I intend to leverage my educational and professional knowledge to contribute to healthcare policy improvements and research, thereby making a tangible improvement to healthcare systems in the U.S.
