About Kayla Lane-Obee

I've studied English language and literature for six years at a collegiate level. I have an Associate of Arts degree in English from Taft College, a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Language and Literature from California State University, Bakersfield, and I am projected to graduate with a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from Chatham University. My skills in creative writing have enhanced my technical writing skills. I proofread, copy edit, and mentor undergraduate and graduate students of various academic fields ranging from nursing science to creative manuscripts for Chatham University's Writing Center. Additionally, I freelance as a manuscript copy editor and formatter for my colleagues at Chatham University. I am skilled with high-level, academic and technical writing as well as various forms of creative writing such as fiction, creative non-fiction, and poetry. English language, technical and creative writing and editing, strong reading comprehension, an ability to translate niche information and knowledge to a broad audience, and an eye for detail and teamwork are some of my most prominent skills as a proofreader, copy editor, and writer.

In addition to my work as a proofreader and copy-editor for Chatham's Writing Center, I also instruct a COR145 class (a 1-credit course that teaches students how to elevate their writing to the expected academic standard) where I have a group of students who are required to meet with me in order to develop their writing skills. I work with these students on a regular basis, and I have seen them grow under my instruction.
  • Chatham University
    Project Manager/Facilitator
Chatham University Sep 2020 - Present
    Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States
As my teaching placement for my concentration in pedagogy, I manage/facilitate a monthly event at Chatham University called Holding Space on the Page. This event corresponds with each national History and Heritage month where I, my supervisor, the head of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and the participants who join the event celebrate creative writers, who share the identity of the month in observance, and their work. As a way to maintain diversity and uplift voices of marginalized identities, I select a peer or colleague, whose identity is in celebration, to co-facilitate each event with me. Together, my co-facilitator and I choose poets and/or prose to read, I lead discussion, and we craft prompts and activities to engage our participants.
