I've been working in Solar for a little over two years now and it feels good knowing that I have finally found a career worth pursuing! I came to NC Solar Now by chance after being laid off like many others during Covid's worst stretch. I had recently started Wake Tech's Electrical Systems and Communications programs hoping to learn some trade skills and somehow talked my way into a Solar permitting position for NC Solar Now. I quickly became proficient with the specs of the equipment we used, how to read our plan sets, and apply for permits in handfuls of AHJs.-- I had impressed my bosses and within 5 months was promoted to a position on our Design & Engineering team with a focus on Conceptual Renders for customer-facing design approvals. In this position, I was able to gain experience in a number of different solar software systems such as Scanifly, and Aurora. I was also trained to use AutoCAD to prepare these designs and after a while was asked to train others following me in the same position. I LOVED this work and wanted to gain more knowledge. I signed myself up for Enphase, SolarEdge, and Tesla Systems training and have received some certifications in the pursuit of gaining my NABCEP. I then trained on how to review site visit data and create full plan sets to be submitted for permitting. I didn't get the chance to do this work long before the company asked me to step in and manage the Interconnections and Permitting Departments since I had previously done so well and we were in need of filling that role. While I wasn't excited to leave my role in design, I knew the company needed stronger leadership in these departments and it was also my way into a management role. I'm always looking for new opportunities to learn more so I decided to take it on. In the past few months, I have learned a ton about managing a team of 4 while still tackling some of our commercial design needs for NC Solar and while it has presented its challenges, it has also presented rewards. All in all, I look forward to continuing my career in Solar and all the opportunities and knowledge it presents in the years to come.
