As a Level 3b Occupational Therapy Student at I’m For Kids in Airdrie and Calgary I work/play with children aged 3-5 in the preschool setting in order to address their fine motor skills and ability to regulate in the classroom environment. I co-create a safe environment and therapeutic relationships built on trust. I work on making interventions into fun and engaging activities. I managed a caseload of approximately 25 kids, helped plan and facilitate groups and collaborate with parents, teachers and the interdisciplinary team.

As a Level 3a Occupational Therapy Student at Bethany Calgary I worked in the Young Adult Program and the Secured Alternative Level of Care Unit. I managed a caseload of approximately 30 residents which included completing initial assessments, functional observations, cognitive assessments, aiding in Lower Limb Assessments and discharge planning within the interdisciplinary team. Based on the therapeutic relationships that I established with residents, I facilitated participation in activities of daily living through cognitive and physical interventions that centred upon the residents’ interests, abilities, wants and needs. Physical interventions included contributing to ordering adaptive equipment. I created rehabilitation plans in collaboration with the residents, therapy assistants, nursing staff and the physical therapist. I facilitated a lunch and learn about Functional Electrical Stimulation for the rehabilitation team.

Foothills Medical Centre

As a Level 2 Student at Foothills Medical Centre I worked on the Tertiary Rehabilitation Unit with the Stroke (CVA) Team. In my role, I completed cognitive assessments required for discharge planning to begin to understand the abilities of the individual, build insight and plan for necessary supports. Based on the assessments and the interests, needs, wants and abilities of the individuals and their support networks, I collaborated with the interdisciplinary team to provide rehabilitative cognitive and physical interventions. I completed all necessary documentation and participated in rounds and family conferences. I utilized different frames of references when implementing interventions including Neurodevelopmental and Motor Learning frames of reference.

Alberta Hospital, Edmonton

As a Level 1 Student I divided my time between two outpatient mental health group therapy settings, Edmonton Hope and Wellness Centre (EHWC) and the Twice-weekly Interpersonal and Emotion Skills (TIES) Program. I learned about how to implement group therapy through an online, tele-rehabilitation format. I began to facilitate group therapy sessions that used recovery focused skill development based on principles of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and/or Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). The knowledge acquisition and skill development facilitated through these groups was to support individuals to achieve their personal SMART goals, develop positive interpersonal relationships, regulate their emotions and engage meaningfully in occupations within their lives. I updated all relevant documentation in Connect Care.

As a Job Coach I provided individuals with disabilities and the larger community (networks, employers, etc.) with resources and skills in order to achieve competitive employment for people of all abilities. I worked with individuals to help them establish where they would like to work, prepare for employment, explore and experience diverse workplaces. I worked with the individual to maintain employment in their career/job.
