This position is through the Student Conservation Association and AmeriCorps at Boston National Historical Park and Boston African American Historic Site;My main role at the park was to work with the Supervisory Park Ranger and Volunteer Program Manager as an assistant volunteer coordinator;- Recruited volunteers, followed up with volunteer applications, onboarded and trained new volunteers, coordinated volunteers, and acted as a point of contact for our volunteers;- Planned volunteer events, like day trips out to other National Parks;- Lead conference calls between fellow Northeast Regional Centennial Volunteer Ambassadors; - Created a new structure and format for the volunteer programAccomplishments:- I planned a Volunteer Appreciation BBQ with my Supervisor. My main tasks were to book a band within our budget, order new America the Beautiful Volunteer passes, and check RSVPs daily. I also helped work with GPO on printing our invitations, and then stuffed all the invitations to be sent out. - I visited local colleges at their Volunteer Fairs, we did outreach with students about our volunteer opportunities, plus Find Your Park and the Centennial. A few students have now started to volunteer with Boston National Historical Park. I visited another local college in March.- I planned an end-of-year volunteer party at the historic Commandant's House in December. I booked a piano player, caterer, table provider, created and sent out invitations, and coordinated with park staff for day-of event needs.- A fellow Centennial Volunteer Ambassador and I planned and facilitated a Youth Retreat Weekend that brought local teenagers to all three National Parks of Boston. Throughout the weekend the teens were able to talk to Park Rangers at different parks about careers with the National Park Service and partners, plus how each ranger specifically got their job with the park service. The teens did two different volunteer projects over the weekend as well.

I worked at the ticket booth helping guests with general exhibit halls, memberships, and theater ticket purchases; scanned tickets at the theaters and travelling exhibit.

I worked with the Park Historian doing historic research on Native Americans, USS Lifesavers, and colonial settlers;I learned about collections management using the National Park Service ICMS, Re:Discovery database, pest management, exhibit development and design; Archaeology site assessments were done in order to measure the risk of loss due to climate change each year; I helped monitor and manage the historic buildings and lighthouses in the park Accomplishments:- My co-intern and I created a temporary exhibit on display at the Salt Pond Visitor Center about an archaeology site located at an historic house. I did most of the research for the project and my fellow intern created the graphics.

My internship with the Volunteer Map Curator involved organizing and digitizing the map collection in various departments of the National Museum of Natural History using a Microsoft Access database. The Smithsonian provided many career development opportunities as well, i.e. lectures, behind-the scenes tours, networking gatherings, and advice on how to get a job with a government agency.
