I work at a rural walk-in clinic that focuses on immediate ambulatory care outside of a traditional emergency room. The clinic is equipped with x-ray, EKG, ultrasound, and echocardiogram services. In addition to diagnosing and treating acute illnesses, I read x-rays, set splints, drain abscesses, suture lacerations, administer various types of injections, complete other simple procedures, and provide primary care.

“Everyone goes home safe and healthy every day” is Barrick’s motto. My responsibility in achieving that goal is to perform monitoring for gases, noise, respirable silica dust, and diesel particulate matter for the underground mine. I identify which tasks or areas generate health risks. I work with management to limit overexposures and interact with miners on a daily basis by coaching them in the field. My priority is to help miners understand the health risks they take and how to prevent them. Other responsibilities include performing audiometric testing, pulmonary function testing, and quantitative respirator fit testing.

I assisted Scott Bernhardt's team in researching the vector competence of fleas and mosquitos. Through the use of field collections, molecular biology, and animal models, the research team investigated how anatomic, genomic and molecular determinants contributed to the vector competence of arthropod vectors in disease transmission. The research examined the vector competence of fleas transmitting plague and mosquitoes transmitting dengue. My duties in the lab included developing pupae into adult mosquitoes and performing DNA extractions, polymerase chain reactions (PCR), gel electrophoresis, and PCR purification for collected specimens of fleas.

As a teaching assistant, I taught an Advanced Human Physiology Lab once a week. I gave lab instructions, answered questions, and provided materials. I formulated questions for all lab quizzes and later corrected and graded the quizzes. I also helped write one of the lab tests. In addition, I held an hour tutoring session once a week for students. During this time, I clarified concepts, quizzed students, and gave recommendations for effective study habits.

Under the supervision of a certified Industrial Hygienist, I performed respirator fit-testing and ventilation audits. I sampled employee exposure and sampled areas for noxious gases (e.g. sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, and phosphine), toxic metals (e.g. cadmium and Chromium 6), respirable silica dust, and noise levels. Part of the sampling process involved identifying which employees were at greater health risks. I then sent the samples to an American Industrial Hygienist Association (AIHA) accredited lab to be analyzed. After receiving the respective laboratory results, I formulated a control program to limit employee overexposures.

Summer sales and marketing for Comcast was extremely profitable for me. Through this experience, I developed vital social skills and learned to present products in a desirable fashion. I knocked every door in my assigned area and gave each family a chance to act on our saving promotions or to upgrade their services at a good price. I met my personal daily goals and continually exceeded my weekly quota of sales given by the company, and was thus awarded "Top Seller of the Week" multiple times throughout the summer. Furthermore, though this was my first experience selling door-to-door products, I was given the opportunity to train new sales reps.
