Research and development activities on Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR), Oil sands processing, mature fine tailings (MFT) rheology, hydraulic fracturing fluids, rheology of drilling fluids and defoamers.

Ultrafiltration Membrane Development: Led the development of high flux UF membranes with breakthrough Permeability - Separation Factor trade-offs. High permeability UF membranes with narrow pore size distribution were developed. Part of a team that developed a high speed UF hollow fiber membrane spinning pilot line. Membrane Coatings Development: Developed anti-fouling coatings for reverse osmosis membranesDevelopment of Hybrid Membranes: Developed composite membranes comprising of dispersed porous inorganic particles in a polymer matrix.Transport in porous and nonporous membranes: Developed measuring techniques and models for solutes and salts rejection in UF and RO membranes.

Phase separation kinetics and thermodynamics of membrane dopes: Designed and developed a novel microfluidic device to measure the kinetics of phase separation of membrane solutions. Using this device, I measured parameters that control the kinetics of phase inversion of membrane dopes.Colloidal stability of zeolite suspensions in polymer solutions: Established methodology for the preparation of stable zeolite suspensions in organic solvents and polymer solutions. Rheology of complex fluids : Characterized the rheology and developed correlations for the viscosity and relaxation times for a variety of materials; ranging from solutions of simple oligomers, through complex macromolecules to high molecular weight synthetic polymers to suspensions of particles in polymeric lattices.Elongational rheology of membrane dopes: For simple Newtonian Fluids, the shear and elongational viscosities are related by a simple Trouton’s ratio. Using the capillary breakup extensional rheometer (CaBER), characterized the rheology of polymer solutions and suspensions of zeolite particles in elongation flow.Particle tracking micro-rheology: In this technique, the Brownian motion of suspended colloidal particles is used to probe the microstructure of the suspending fluid.
