Staff RepresentativeCommunications Workers Of America Jan 2002 - Oct 2006Trenton, NjRepresenting a large public sector Union in the workplace puts you on the front lines in the battle against discrimination in the workplace.One of the problems is, it can take a long time to realize you’re being discriminated against.Initially working in a toxic environment leaves you feeling like everything is in your head.It starts with an offhand comment about your looks, your sex life, or a few jokes at your expense.As time goes by, things slowly begin to get worse. Perhaps it’s unwanted touching, sexual advances, or snide remarks.Eventually, you say to yourself enough is enough, and decide to go through official channels to raise a grievance.The Rep comes in, listens to your story, and helps build your case against the employer.If you’re lucky, you get the one who becomes invested in your situation, and shares your outrage.In my case, I cared so deeply about each person I represented & each injustice, I almost burned out.Discrimination takes multiple forms - racism, sexism, homophobia, you name it. All symptoms of a larger workplace problem.Sadly, fighting on a case-by-case basis isn’t enough.I loved my job as a Union Rep, but the constant injustice left me wanting to do more.It started by recruiting new members & organizing events focused around inclusion to educate everyone on current issues and address their concerns.That grew into building a cohort of 85 Union Leaders, and creating leadership development Programs to increase their ability. Eventually, I found myself knee deep in New Jersey’ politics, an organizer on the ground learning how to mobilize Union Members into political action.
