Representing a large public sector Union in the workplace puts you on the front lines in the battle against discrimination in the workplace.One of the problems is, it can take a long time to realize you’re being discriminated against.Initially working in a toxic environment leaves you feeling like everything is in your head.It starts with an offhand comment about your looks, your sex life, or a few jokes at your expense.As time goes by, things slowly begin to get worse. Perhaps it’s unwanted touching, sexual advances, or snide remarks.Eventually, you say to yourself enough is enough, and decide to go through official channels to raise a grievance.The Rep comes in, listens to your story, and helps build your case against the employer.If you’re lucky, you get the one who becomes invested in your situation, and shares your outrage.In my case, I cared so deeply about each person I represented & each injustice, I almost burned out.Discrimination takes multiple forms - racism, sexism, homophobia, you name it. All symptoms of a larger workplace problem.Sadly, fighting on a case-by-case basis isn’t enough.I loved my job as a Union Rep, but the constant injustice left me wanting to do more.It started by recruiting new members & organizing events focused around inclusion to educate everyone on current issues and address their concerns.That grew into building a cohort of 85 Union Leaders, and creating leadership development Programs to increase their ability. Eventually, I found myself knee deep in New Jersey’ politics, an organizer on the ground learning how to mobilize Union Members into political action. Over time, I helped them connect the dots between their individual struggles in the workplace to the broader movement for workers' rights. Today, thanks to them, I continue to advocate for workers’ rights and have the skills & experience needed to push for larger system changes, which impact not just individuals, but Communities as a whole.

That meant convincing Lawmakers to invest funding into programs that achieve these goals by proving that it would benefit New York City as a whole.…It was far from easy.But what happened next, changed the way they think forever.In the aftermath of 9/11 when the streets erupted into chaos, our Union Members catapulted into action.EMS workers put their lives on the line, while Nurses, Social workers, Sanitation workers, and other Municipal workers worked tirelessly behind the scenes to keep the city running.Yes, some were more visible than others, saving lives and clearing the streets, but for every person with a visible impact there were 3+ others cleaning hospitals, repairing power lines, and ensuring that 8 million people had clean drinking water.It showed the world that when you invest in your people, they can perform miracles.
