In my role, I conduct in depth investigations, synthesizing civilian, police, witness, and audio/video testimony. At the conclusion of my investigations, I write a report to be reviewed by our board, recommending that the allegations against the officers be exonerated, substantiated, unfounded, or, if there is a lack of evidence, unsubstantiated. Each full investigation requires interviewing complainants, victims, and police officers, and to date I have conducted or helped conduct 200+ officer interviews and 200+ civilian interviews. Additionally, I recommend complaints for mediation, a voluntary process through which individuals resolve their complaints against police officers in person, through face to face conversations with officers in the presence of a trained mediator. Sending cases to mediation is contingent on victims or complainants accepting the program, and from December 2016 through 2017 I was one of the top 10 investigators at having complainants accept mediation (out of close to 100 investigators). Apart from conducting interviews and writing reports, daily responsibilities include subpoenaing video footage and other relevant documents (such as medical records), making contact attempts to complainants or victims, using public records databases (such as LexisNexis) or police databases (such as BADS) to find complainants/victims or potential witnesses, and ordering and reviewing police documents (such as roll calls, tactical plans, threat/resistance/injury worksheets, memo books, command logs, etc.).
