How did I get to this point? My name is Edith Nwadike. I also go by Kc for short. I am very ambitious, motivated, and determined to follow my dreams. Being a nurse is one of those dreams that I plan to follow through. Over the years, I completed and received my CNA certification. Soon after that, I completed my LVN course and received my license. I found out at a young age that I have this desirable love for helping people. Later on, I was able to find out that I could work and also do what I love doing the most as a profession. Getting my first job as a CNA was a challenge; working in a setting with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds was new and a little bit intimidating. So many people have medical issues that come in multiple variations, so respect was one thing I declared to myself that I would always give. I took this challenge as a test to see if nursing was something I truly wanted to pursue. One night I changed my perception of nursing completely. It was one of the most difficult challenges I faced while working as a CNA. At work, a patient came in with methamphetamine withdrawals; my responsibility was to monitor and assess the patient for any changes. As I was doing my rounds, I checked and observed that new patient that came in. Walking into the room, I find the patient's eyes wide open and rolled back. My first initiative was to go and check with the patient to get a response. I then checked the carotid artery to see if the patient was breathing and found out that there were no signs of breathing; I was mortified. I then started CPR and called a code blue. I did two rounds of compressions before the staff walked in. Soon after, more nurses and a few doctors, along with a few MTs, came running in. MT took over CPR, and later, the patient was declared stable and was moved to the ICU for further monitoring. My charge nurse and all of the staff were so jovial that I could catch the drastic change in that patient's condition. After clocking out on my way home, I smiled big, not because I was ready to go home but because I genuinely felt good about what happened at work that night. There's no better feeling than that; being able to offer help or extend a hand when needed in a crucial time was a thrill. That is when I finally realized that my calling is nursing.
