Kimberly Cabrera is a second year first-generation Latina at the University of California, Los Angeles. She is majoring in Biology and is planning to pursue a minor in education. Kimberly aspires to pursue a career in either healthcare or education due to her firsthand experience growing up in an under-resourced community that encountered health and education disparities. She volunteered in a student-run organization where she provided free health services and health education to low-income communities in Mexico as she explored her interest in healthcare accessibility. Currently, she is part of PULSE (Pre-medical Undergraduate Learning through Shadowing Experience) to get an early hands-on experience in healthcare to solidify her interest in the medical field. She is also part of the University of Southern California (USC) Student Engagement, Exploration, and Development (SEEDS) Project where she participates in providing mentoring sessions in science to middle school students from low-income communities to get a first-hand perspective on education. Although her interests in health care and education equality are two opposite areas, she hopes to combine these interests to bridge the disparities in healthcare and education as well as search for a career where she can ultimately impact marginalized populations and bridge the socioeconomic gap that affects communities of color obtaining resources.
