Lecturer

Current

Cambridge, Ma, Us

Lab Professor for 2.671: Measurement and Instrumentation, a course for undergraduate mechanical engineers. In lab, students learn how to use lab equipment to perform useful measurements and techniques to analyze and communicate results of experiments. Students pose original research questions, then devise their own experiment to answer them. This course covers a lot of ground, including: sensor selection, experimental design, statistical analysis and uncertainty quantification, frequency domain analysis, and technical communication. In addition to advising students, I have helped update the course, including:-Modular and interactive MATLAB scripts to accelerate data analysis-Video and image analysis in MATLAB for student experimenters-Custom hardware for 2nd order (mass-spring-dashpot) system identification lab

Research Scientist

I applied principles of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics and control systems to improve print quality, which is a question of delivering the right amount of metal, in the right place, with the right amount of energy. I worked with hardware and software engineering teams to optimize print performance, machine consistency, new materials, new geometry and higher speeds. I used Python, MATLAB and other tools to:-Build, run and validate multi-physics models to understand process physics and optimize process parameters and control systems-Empirical data mining for big picture and voxel-level trends-Design of Experiments (DoE) planning and analysis for process development

Nov 2018 - Nov 2019

Consulting Research Scientist

Independent

I use literature review, analysis, simulation and lab experiments to help clients define, research and solve technical problems regarding sensors, actuators, electronics, and entire systems. I have worked on thermal, fluid, energy systems, 3D printers and medical devices. Recent projects include: -Medtech startup: worked with client team to design, built and test prototype of electromechanical system to deliver gaseous drug to ventilator circuit. Developed software, provided in-lab support and post-lab data analysis for animal trial of drug delivery system. Designed and developed firmware for lab prototype of patient-triggered, breath-synchronized drug delivery system -Designed, built and tested solar-powered thermoelectric cold chain vaccine with GPS and temperature data logging-Overhauled online technology incubator portal-Developed prototype device to interface existing injection-molded flow sensor with new I2C sensors for global healthcare company

R&D Engineer

Somerville, Ma, Us

I started a "Skunkworks" team to make 3D printing better, faster, stronger and more accessible. I started this team alone, eventually building a team of >7 FTE. This project required versatility and fast execution in a complicated 3D printing process.- Designed and built a low-cost experiment to prove feasibility of new 3D printing technique- Designed, and commissioned increasingly sophisticated prototype printers.- Designed and tested critical mechanical, electrical, software, laser and material subsystems - Designed and adapted calibration equipment to to improve accuracy- Optimized print settings to achieve accuracy reliability and reliability, printed part mechanical properties, and print speed.- Extensive troubleshooting the mechatronic and software stack to isolate root cause and solve print issues- Recruited engineers and designers to increase the team from 1 FTE to 7 FTE + interns

Postdoctoral Research Associate

Cambridge, Ma, Us

- Recruited a team of graduate students and undergraduate research assistants. - Designed, built and commissioned the experimental reactor system with appropriate safety and analytical subsystems.- Completed techno-economic analysis of the product, recommending a change in business model.- Primary market research to identify first customers and commercialization partners. My postdoctoral research focused on inexpensive, small-scale technology to convert methane gas to liquid hydrocarbon fuels and methanol. The traditional commercial off-the-shelf approach is economical only on very large scales with plants that are very capital intensive. Why liquid hydrocarbon fuels? Liquid hydrocarbon fuels1) have extremely high energy density, more energy in less volume2) offer drop-in compatibility with existing pipelines, tanks, engines and stoves3) have very low carbon intensity when created from waste/nuisance gases 4) could act as an inexpensive, practical bridge fuel while we wait for solar, wind and batteries to beat oil and gas on price. Why methanol?1) Common industrial commodity2) Highly developed, low-cost synthesis reactors3) High density liquid product is easy to transportThe flexibility and scalability of our approach allows it to be used in two distinct ways:1) Convert low-cost, methane-rich natural gas to high-cost gasoline, diesel or jet fuel in developed countries, or 2) Convert waste gases that contain methane such as biogas from agricultural waste or landfill gas to liquid fuel like methanol or DME to be used in cook stoves, scooters, trucks or tractors in low and middle-income countries.
