The SOC team at Echo is responsible for a team of 120 Kenyan riflemen and 3 Iraqi interpreters who provide perimeter and interior security. The full time American staff of seven supervises the guards and provides the base with a QRF (quick reaction force) responsible for direct action in case of perimeter or interior incursion.Additional duties here entail training of the guard force in reaction drills, ROE/RUF and other guardpost duties as well as running all range qualifications for our Kenyan guards to ensure compliance and excellence with the Glock 17-19 series, M-4 Carbine and RPK Squad Assault Rifle.As a Security Specialist with SOC at Camp Taji, Iraq I had multiple roles to be aware of and ready to respond for. My primary function was to serve as the liaison between DoD, Army, State Department and other contractors in the Base Defense Operations Center. This included all incoming and outgoing communications, monitoring of PTDS Aerostat, BETTS-C and RAID camera systems, coordination of visual, virtual and radio input into controlled and coordinated dispatch of PMO, Rapid Response Team or other defensive assets up to and including Army integrated air support. Collateral duties included training and oversight with respect to the TCN guard force, mainly composed of Ugandans. This included tactical direction of static guard posts and towers, gate control at Entry Control Points and administrative function to include weapons qualification and classes in proper military communication and reporting.
