Lead Chemist - Research and Development in Fuels, Lubricants, Oilfield, & Surfactants
Senior Scientist
I played an instrumental role in identifying a new research program in Upstream Chemicals for our Power & Water business. I was chosen to lead the technical efforts in identifying key challenges that oil field operators face when deploying a suite of treatment chemicals in onshore and deep-water flow assurance applications. I was the task leader of a team of chemists wherein we developed advanced polymeric materials to be introduced as new products for our business in flow assurance applications.
Senior Scientist Project Lead
Developed and identified a novel class of polymeric iron dispersant materials for high pressure boiler applications with 2X increase iron transport and equal deposit control.Directed and coordinated the efforts of our team in pursuit of next generation iron dispersants. Evaluated and assessed program deliverables and streamlined efforts which enabled our team to meet our deliverable and budget.
Lead Scientist / Senior Scientist
Design and synthesis of novel materials to include: (1) organic, organometallic, and polymeric electronic materials used in solution-processed organic light emitting diodes (2005-2009), (2) nanoparticle-based inks for the preparation of nonvacuum Cu(In,Ga)Se solar cells(2010), (3) phosphorescent dyes employed in cell imaging applications (2010), (4) developed electronic materials for use in solution processed organic x-ray detectors (2010), (5) polymeric materials applied in a range water related applications.
Postdoctoral Scholar
Synthesized the first-ever molecular Borromean Ring compound by developing and employing a one-pot self-assembly process wherein this topologically unique molecule is generated from a sequence of 42 bond forming steps under strict dynamic covalent and thermodynamic control in greater than 90% yield. These contributions have been recognized in part by the recent 2016 Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to my postdoctoral advisor. Stoddart said, "Your contribution to the synthesis of the BRs will go down in history........Thanks for the wizardry you performed at UCLA."In a review in Topics in Current Chemistry (2005, 249, 1-65), Daryle Busch, the “father” of templation in chemistry, and a past President of the American Chemical Society, has commented – “The achievement was remarkable in a number of ways. It involved what is probably the most complicated template in the chemical literature, based on six zinc(II) ions and both convergent (or endo-directed) and divergent (or exo-directed) molecular turns. In contrast to the overall complexity of the templating system, the reactants were relatively simple......Only the authors know the extent to which alternative components were selected and rejected in failure, but their final choices contain still another special feature. The choice of zinc as the template anchor provided a second opportunity for flexibility in the reacting system because zinc, being a spherical ion, is adaptable when it comes to coordination numbers and coordination geometries.....Further, the yield in this scientific triumph was 90%. The success over the enormous challenge of synthesizing the molecular embodiment of the Borromean link suggests that the science of using the molecular template has reached a level of maturity from which scientists may be expected to produce new molecular entanglements and interlocked structures of profound significance, despite the equally profound challenges they represent.”
