As Chief Technology Officer, my role is to develop and manage the technology strategy in partnership with the rest of the executive team, and lead relationship management with key vendors and service providers to ensure that their offerings meet the company’s objectives and evolve as necessary for changing business and marketplace demands. As Director, Architecture Standards, I was responsible for aligning the GS1 Canada systems architecture with the GS1 standards and for promoting GS1 Canada concepts to the appropriate standards development groups.I continued in my role as a member of the GS1 Architecture Group, a group of about 30 individuals worldwide responsible for overseeing the technical and architectural aspects of all GS1 standards. Outside the GS1 Architecture Group, I participated in the development of numerous standards related to barcode data collection, electronic commerce, radio frequency identification (RFID), and business and network protocols.One of the key standards groups I led was that of the Object Name Service 2.0, a DNS-based protocol for discovering services and data associated with objects, especially products, identified using GS1 standards. The redesign of ONS was done with the goals of providing extensibility over and above that available in ONS 1.0 and of addressing international governance issues expressed by governments and regulators about the architecture of ONS 1.0.I also continued the design and development of Gateway and Key Directory and oversaw their integration with new services.

As Special Projects Consultant, my responsibilities included software architecture, development, and performance tuning; technology strategy development; and supply chain standards development.During my time in this role, I became part of a joint GS1 US / GS1 Canada initiative working with US Customs and Border Protection to develop guidelines for the implementation of GS1 standards in the forthcoming Enhanced Driver’s License, part of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. I was responsible for developing the technology proposal which was ultimately accepted by US CBP for inclusion in the EDL. Subsequent to that, I worked with both internal and external privacy experts, especially those in the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario, to develop guidelines on the implementation of the EDL.Shortly after the success of the EDL proposal, I joined the GS1 Architecture Group, a group of about 30 individuals worldwide responsible for overseeing the technical and architectural aspects of all GS1 standards.One of the key initiatives I started in this role was the design and development of Gateway, a SAML 2.0 single sign-on solution for all of the services provided by GS1 Canada and its partners; and Key Directory, an implementation of the GS1 identification standards that manages the issuance of the GS1 Company Prefix and associated identification keys.

My primary role was in providing standards and architectural expertise to the new GS1 Registry Platform, working with users, analysts, architects, developers, and testers to ensure that the application was aligned with GS1 standards and positioned for long term growth. I also worked within the organization to refine the integrity of the GS1 system at a process and management level. This included documenting best practices across all GS1 Member Organizations, reviewing policy and operational documentation, and providing input into governance meetings.I was a core member of the GS1 team exploring Verifiable Credentials, a W3C standard for cryptographically secure, tamper-evident electronic claims, and co-chair of the W3C Verifiable Credentials Use Cases working group.Highlights:- Developed global guidance on the internal business process management side of the GS1 identification system- Led a team of senior members from GS1 Member Organizations around the world in updating global GS1 policies to align with current standards and practices- Developed the data model for applying W3C Verifiable Credentials to GS1 licensing, identification, and data sharing- Developed multiple internal applications to improve data management processes and automate communication with GS1 Member Organizations

In 1998, Dolphin Data Development Ltd. was approached to remediate Frito-Lay Canada's Direct Store Delivery (DSD) application for Y2K compliance. After evaluation of the existing application and supporting infrastructure, Dolphin and Frito-Lay determined that the better option was to rewrite the application on the existing handhelds and to redesign the supporting network infrastructure. As a result of this decision, Dolphin was able to deliver additional functionality above and beyond Y2K compliance and to develop a network infrastructure that reduced complexity, maintenance costs, and communication costs.Since the project's inception in 1998, I was responsible for all aspects of handheld application design and development and have been jointly responsible with Frito-Lay Canada personnel for the design of the network architecture required to support the handhelds. In 2006, Frito-Lay Canada approved migration of the application from the old DOS handhelds to a new Windows CE platform. I was responsible for design and development, which included not just the migration itself but also new features supported by the new platform: signature capture, graphical printing, and XML document archiving.I continued to provide support and new feature development until the application was replaced as part of a systems consolidation project with Frito-Lay US.Highlights:- Redesigned inventory management, leading to significantly reduced inventory shrinkage- Redesigned payment management, leading to significantly improved customer reconciliation processes- Optimized application functionality to align with user practice- During migration to Windows CE, optimized application performance to align with new hardware capabilities, leading to measurable improvements in user productivity

As a consultant for Borland Canada, I was responsible for delivering training on Borland's J2EE Enterprise Server and JBuilder products; for providing advanced technical support and deployment architecture analysis; and advising on application development techniques for many of Borland's customers in Canada.

As Chief Architect at BCE Emergis, I was responsible for the design and technology selection for products developed for its clients.

Procure.com was spun off from Livingston Distribution to take its innovative web-based ordering system to the market. As Chief Architect, I was responsible for the design and technology selection for the revised product. I worked as part of the development team to deliver the product and with the network team to design and secure the network infrastructure to host it.

During my time at Livingston, I was responsible for the design and development of numerous critical supply chain applications including a hospital consignment inventory management system, a pallet tracking system that addressed the unique position of Livingston Distribution as the intermediary between the supplier and the buyer, and one of the very first web-based tracking systems for showing the progress of consumer order delivery from the time of ordering through to shipment, customs clearance, and delivery.

I was responsible for preparing the technical side of sales proposals and for designing and developing the applications sold to the customers. During my time with ASI, I developed numerous applications, particularly in the manufacturing, logistics, and supply chain industries, with special focus on warehouse management and manufacturing automation.

As a summer student at Bell Northern Research, I was responsible for the design and development of one of the very first dial-by-name applications for the Norstar Meridian phone system with the ability to pull names and phone numbers from multiple databases simultaneously. The application was part of an advanced hospital telephone system with "follow me" capability for doctors, nurses, and hospital administration staff so that they could receive calls and manage messages from any extension.
