Mid-career economist, statistician, health services researcher, and educator, with a focus on Health Economics, Social Epidemiology, Population Health, Insurance, Social Policy, and Public Finance.As the Policy Research Manager in the Center for Insurance Policy & Research at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), I lead and conduct research and policy analyses on issues relevant to the insurance industry and insurance regulation. My primary emphases at the CIPR are health, healthcare, and health insurance; socioeconomic and demographic disparities in health and insurance; and investment finance, particularly social impact investing. My mission is to provide evidence-based insights and recommendations to state regulators and stakeholders and to ensure that the Center for Insurance Policy & Research's research agenda aligns with the interests and objectives of insurance regulators, industry professionals, and policyholders. I also lead, encourage, and mentor several direct reports, including research analysts, post-doctoral researchers, contractors, and interns.In addition to my duties at the NAIC, I am a part-time faculty member in the Department of Economics at the University of Missouri-Columbia, I teach courses annually in Health Economics and State and Local Public Finance. I have been with the University of Missouri since 2021. I have also served as an adjunct instructor at the University of Kansas School of Medicine, the University of Kansas (Lawrence), Baker University (Baldwin City, KS), and Rockhurst University (Kansas City, MO). Formerly I was a full-time Assistant Professor of Economics at Georgia State University.Before joining the NAIC, I was a senior economist with the Federal Reserve. In previous years, I worked extensively with the World Bank and USAID. I have published multiple articles in peer-reviewed journals and industry publications. I am passionate about advancing the understanding of and improvement in health and insurance outcomes.I am also a former paramedic and professional musician (trumpet).I am originally from the Appalachian area of Virginia and live in Overland Park, Kansas. I am married to a veterinarian and have four children.
