About Dillon Lewis

Hello! My name is Kearsley "Dillon" Lewis and I am an interdisciplinary software engineer with a passion for problem solving and the desire to make the world a better place. At the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab (JHUAPL), I develop assured autonomy software for aerial vehicles and I help research reinforcement learning for aircraft autonomy. I graduated from Northeastern University with a degree in Physics and Computer Science plus a minor in Music. I am currently pursuing a part-time masters at Johns Hopkins in Robotics and Autonomous Systems with a focus on autonomous systems. Autonomy for aircraft and spacecraft is essential for the future and I would like to research and develop the tools, methods, or applications in this domain. With a combined physics/robotics/autonomy/programming background, I also enjoy working with physics informed neural networks, modeling and simulation of complex dynamics, and other physics/robotics/programming niches such as big data for astronomy, artificial intelligence for scientific analysis or robotics, or programming space instrumentation software. When I'm not working, studying, or in class, I'm probably hanging out with my wife and dog, reading a sci-fi or fantasy classic, watching something new on Netflix, or playing music. I love dogs, watching the office, and long walks on the beach.Feel free to message me anytime as I'm always looking for new and exciting opportunities or projects!

  • The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory
    Software Engineer
The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory Jul 2022 - Present
    Laurel, Maryland, Us
At APL, I primarily work on assured autonomy software to enable the safe testing of live aircraft autonomies. I manage repositories and pipelines, conduct end-to-end system testing, engage in code reviews, implement new features, fix bugs, write unit tests, and write documentation for both the flight and ground software. These efforts involve full-stack development, UI/UX design, networking, API design, and algorithm development. In addition to my primary work, I have some research tasks involving physics informed neural networks, multi-modal machine learning, applied LLMs, and reinforcement learning. I have also started helping with some modelling and simulation, assisted with some proposal writing, and I have written a custom autopilot ground control station from scratch.

  • Northeastern University Students For The Exploration And Development Of Space
Project Lead For Northeastern University Nasa Rasc-Al 2021 Challenge Team
Northeastern University Students For The Exploration And Development Of Space Oct 2020 - Jun 2021
I led an interdisciplinary group of students in developing 9-page proposal responding to NASA RASC-AL 2021 Challenge Theme 3: Venus Flyby Mission. Our concept was VALHALLA, the Venusian Atmospheric and Land Exploration: a Human-Assisted Low-Latency Approach. VALHALLA uses a commercial vehicle to support a crew of four to travel to and from Venus. The VALHALLA concept utilizes low-latency communications for humans in transit to control drones launched from an airship in Venus’s atmosphere to explore key research areas in Venus’s early development and current conditions. In performing this mission, we will gain valuable knowledge about Venus’s greenhouse effect, surface structures, and seismic activity. As the first long-duration manned deep-space mission, VALHALLA’s mission architecture will provide a major leap forward in interplanetary travel and will be a steppingstone for future missions to Mars and other bodies. This was my first time leading an interdisciplinary project of this magnitude, and from this I have learned so much about leadership, project management, systems engineering, and the Venusian atmosphere. This project has inspired me to want to further study other planets and atmospheres as well as to continue facilitating ideas and discussion on future exploration of the solar system and beyond.
