Profile bio

About Kyle Oberndorfer

During my career I've come to learn that taking on new roles and assignments (sometimes by choice and other times based on reacting to unpleasant realities) always gives you new perspectives and helps make you better no matter the new / future role. I've held roles in Technical Support, Engineering, Marketing, Product and Business management as well as Project & Program management. All those experiences - even those that might not seem related - always made me more productive and impactful in whatever my new role was.The moral of the story is - don't be afraid to deviate from what you might thing is a straight, clear path. If you're someone in a customer facing role - don't be afraid to go "in house" to R&D or Marketing and bring that knowledge with you. You can always move back to a customer facing role if you want - now you'll be armed with that deep "internal insight" not to mention the connections you've made. The opposite is true as well - if you've worked in house / behind the scenes bring that product knowledge to a customer-facing role!To those starting out in any industry - including but not limited to high tech - I think a great role early in your career are those in customer facing areas such as technical support or customer service. Its the best and fastest way to learn about end markets & users, interpersonal skills, and how companies operate - all things most don't learn about in school or if sheltered in some hidden behind the scenes nook! Even if you think such a role is not commensurate with your degree I would argue its well worth it.Finally, be open to change - again be it by choice OR in those cases where the role itself changes or you are forced to change roles. Give everything time - don't jump to any conclusion if you're reassigned or the job changes. I've seen many people (and was tempted myself) want to leave a company because they were being moved to a new department or new role. Early in my career this happened to me and I was on the verge of giving my notice when I was counselled (very wisely in hindsight) that I should "try it - if you're going to leave anyway you have nothing to loose. Give it 6 months and then leave if you want". That advice in hindsight seems "simple and obvious" but at the time it stopped and made me think and truly improved & accelerated my career AND my outlook on change itself!

Listed skills include R&D, Product Development, Six Sigma, Process Improvement, and 38 others.
