As part of the Sustainability team for BNBuilders we are trying to drive change in sustainable construction. Construction accounts for a substantial amount of the worlds embodied carbon and waste production every year. As contributor to this impact we are seeking new pathways to reduce our footprint on the industry. As a Sustainability Manger I work with project teams to track sustainability goals, be a liaison between our clients, design teams, and construction teams on reporting standards, material selection and waste reduction. Regulations can be vastly different between all of our markets so I help research, comment, and educated on this changing landscape and how it effects our practices. Alongside regulations we have adopted internal goals which highlight our efforts and guarantee innovation in our industry. I assist in the planning, research, and reporting required in tracking these goals. There is a significant knowledge gap between design and laborers with regards to sustainability. I also head up our internal education efforts which are target at filling this gap and outreaching to the next generation of builders to insure a more sustainable future.

At ArchEcology I work to support my team through the management of documentation and assistance with LEED project management for new construction multifamily residential, mixed-use, commercial offices and retail. I do this by maintaining a deep understanding of the LEED v4 and v4.1 rating systems managing LEED online profiles for projects, creating concise and compelling documentation that features the sustainable efforts made in our projects, and through the technical analysis of credits concerned with mechanical systems, IEQ credits, water calculations, material resources and LCA data, as well as, mapping and analysis for lT and SS credits. My inclination towards graphic design and research has leant me the opportunity to expand how we approach communicating LEED compliance and complex sustainable design ideas. This job frequently demands the ability to manage multiple projects at once as many of our projects are in different phases of design at any given time this allows me to regularly expanded my knowledge of LEED and the evolving v4.1 rating system.

This role started as a teaching assistant role for the course “Adaptive and Resilient Design." The course encourages students to analyze social, environmental, and economic issues in society and derive innovative design solutions based on their evaluations of the problems. This process is unique in that it requires the students to work as a team, choose a problem and map out all of the associated variables. Then by evaluating how those variables are connected they can identify design interventions for the problem that utilize a passive and resilient design practice for truly impactful designs. A second role of this position has been working as part of a committee that is planning new curriculum for a program in Sustainability Leadership, where I get to act as a voice for the prospective student and make suggestions for the future course. The final role I play in this position is a modeling and graphic design aid for a book being written by some of my professors and mentors. Their team is envisioning an introductory guidebook to creating sustainably designed buildings. I am assisting in this project by doing the Sketchup modeling, daylight visualizations, and EUI countdowns for the LEED Gold Building team is creating for the book. This process has taught me a lot about the value of design verification through variable lenses in sustainable design. A building has dramatically different outcomes when designed for performance vs aesthetic or even specifically for the community or environment. Taking the steps to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of each through building science and modeling allows the designer to take the best from each and synthesize a highly performative, sustainable, and resilient building.

As the ACT!Earth intern I assist with GHG Inventory calculations for the campus, assist student groups in planning the annual sustainability forum, work with campus facilities, and oversee the sustainability committee to further sustainability efforts at Jefferson East Falls campus. Additional duties include maintaining an understanding of current GHG inventory softwares, dashboard management, and regular reporting. It has been wonderful to return to campus sustainability. Students, faculty, and staff at a University provide unique insights for the future of sustainability management. The committee I oversee represents members from each of these groups working together to improve our campus through various projects. Whether it is recycling transparency, greenhouse gas reporting, or environmental education, we use our diverse background and combined resources to provide a more holistic plan that leads to a higher success rate. Already in this role I have collected and synthesized the data for our various campus sustainability reports. I have conducted outreach to community partners for our annual sustainability fair, and I have worked with the USGBC student club to put on the best annual Sustainability Fair yet.

This position was broken into two main areas of focus. Firstly, I oversaw a staff of undergraduate students who managed the student recreation area known as the RavenHub. I would walk the space and make sure duties where being completed. I made supply orders, and facilitated contracting work when needed, getting our pool tables leveled and resurfaced for example. I conducted a summer hire training where I lead my staff through a two day retreat. I also held regular meetings with my staff to provide additional training and learn about what was happening in the RavenHub that may need my attention. The second half of my role in this position was working with the Greek organizations on campus. I lead the monthly Presidents meetings and held one on one meetings with each organization. We worked together to solve problems, plan events, and envision a better Greek community on campus.

At Nordstrom a shoe salesman is more than a purveyor of shoes. To be effective on the sales floor I had to maintain an understanding of the merchandise and trends existing outside of my sales floor. I had to work fast and provide one of a kind customer care to every customer I worked with despite how busy it may have gotten. Most importantly, I had to be a team player. I started as a cashier for the company in the summer of 2016. My focus at that time was to help the sales team by wrapping up sales and tracking the customer's purchases. Sometimes my help just meant keeping the phone lines open and helping with returns, other times it meant cleaning the counter space and stock room. Not always glorious duties, these roles allowed my team to work more efficiently. I was later promoted to a sales person, an entirely different game with new and exciting challenges. As a sales person I got to have my own style, image, and brand. I of course worked for Nordstrom and represented the company the best I could, but ultimately it was up to me to decide how I approached customers, served them, and stayed in contact. These customer relationships were the backbone of being a good salesman and are transferable skills across all sectors of business.

At Gail Byers Real Estate I learned about coordinating office functions by managing scheduling, purchasing, and property upkeep. My daily activities included maintenance of active listings on the multiple listing system, and property marketing via physical flyer generation, social media, virtual tours, and online realty websites. I regularly got to engage clients and realtors to schedule showings, help prepare documentation, and organize other office needs. This position taught me how to professionally interact with clients and peer groups and the importance of maintaining brand image by staying true to the companies value proposition.

With AmeriCorps my goal was to promote health in the community for which I served. As the Sustainability Advocate at the City of Moscow I had the opportunity to work on projects that promote environmental health for both the community and the citizens of Moscow. Projects I worked on consisted of volunteer opportunities, sustainability initiatives, and Greenhouse Gas Inventories. The primary function of this position was to analyze and interpret environmental indicators, manage city utility usage, and develop programs to further the City of Moscow's environmental goals. Accomplishments I made while serving the City of Moscow consist of the creation of the Moscow Greenhouse Gas Inventory, improvement of the iCount, non-motorized transportation analysis program, and assistance with the expansion of the Ecodriver program, which focused on reducing the carbon footprint of vehicles by teaching eco-minded driving tactics to employees.

As a member of the University of Idaho Sustainability Center, I worked with fellow staff to improve environmental awareness at the University through event planning, program development, and research. My responsibilities as the event coordinator consisted of the creation of events that collaborated with campus faculty and staff as well as community partners, to educate students at the University about the environment and their place in local and global issues. One event that I am most proud of creating was our Want Not Waste Not event. At this event we got clothing articles from the reject pile at the local Goodwill (clothing that wasn't deemed likely to resell) and used it to show students different things they could do with old clothes. We had demonstrations on how to make things like shopping bags or new clothing styles, as well as, screen printing over current prints for unique designs. This event was a great hit with the students and was my first experience interacting with community partners to increase the impact of a project.
