I am an undergraduate Meng student in Mechanical Engineering at Heriot-Watt University and a present member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Association. Often when I am faced with free time, I fuel my interest by taking broken machinery apart and trying to fix them, such as, a chainsaw that broke down while I was cutting trees down. As I took it apart I found out that the motor had burnt out from over and needed replacing after putting the chainsaw back together it ran well again and I was able to finish the task. I also like to read online about mechanical engineering feats, one in particular I liked was the new rover and entry, decent and landing system created for the 2020 mission to mars, Allowing the mars rover to be lowered on to the surface of mars by a sky crane.I also have helped my friend to rebuild a 1960 Land rover. Starting with just a chassis we salvaged and built the surrounding framework, completely overhauled the wiring loom within the vehicle by removing the old one and inserting a completely new one connecting, the lights, starter motor, and dash. A new exhaust manifold was installed and connected to the engine and a new clutch assembly was installed before attaching the gear box to the clutch housing. We then worked on the original motor bringing it back to life and finally installing the drive shaft to allow the vehicle to move under its own power. I also have worked on my own car, a 2005 mini cooper, overhauling the brakes and finally bleeding the brake lines to improve the braking performance of the car which successfully completed the NC500 after completion of the job. In October 2018 I climbed to Everest base camp with a group of 12 students. We took turns performing different roles for the group. This included Leadership, time-conscientious and safety roles. During the expedition we worked together making sure everyone could make it to base camp.I held the rank of Sergeant in the schools CCF. This allowed me to improve my leadership skills, by overseeing younger pupils in the CCF. The CCF also helped me to use and improve my communication skills, creating plans for each week. Through all my different experiences, I believe I have developed a strong skillset which will be useful to me as an engineer and to any organisation.
