PRACTICE AREA MANAGER, COMMUNITIES AND SURVIVORS (July 2021 - January 2022)In addition to directly managing TLSC's Medical-Legal Partnerships, I oversaw three other departments meeting the legal needs of vulnerable populations across Texas: the Veterans Legal Assistance Program, the Crime Victims Litigation program, and the Legal Aid for Survivors of Sexual Assault program.MANAGING ATTORNEY, MEDICAL-LEGAL PARTNERSHIPS (August 2017 - January 2022)My practice was informed by a desire to address unmet social needs preventing good mental, physical, and fiscal health of individuals and multiplying those results across populations through fully integrated legal care at partner healthcare clinics. I also designed institutional policies for healthcare facilities that not only complied with pertinent law, but also improved patient health, thereby reducing uncompensated care costs.STAFF ATTORNEY (August 2014 - August 2017)In addition to providing legal representation for Austin MLP, I designed and presented CLE on (1) federal and state medical privacy laws, including HIPAA, HITECH, IRC, HB300, and Texas Insurance Code; and (2) PPACA, including navigators, Medicaid expansion, Health Insurance Exchanges, ACOs, women's health, and private causes of action.EQUAL JUSTICE WORKS FELLOW (September 2012 - August 2014)Founded Austin Medical-Legal Partnership, a collaborative project that improves access to justice in a way that supports efficient healthcare delivery and reduces wellness barriers for patients.

I worked with low-income persons on governmental housing legal issues, including those that intersected other laws such as VAWA and criminal law. I advocated successfully for clients wrongfully denied tenancy under Section 8 and public housing programs. I also prevented a family from becoming homeless by intervening in a wrongful eviction.

I discovered a love of health law when I won an appeal of a denied prescription drug matter of first impression concerning off-label usage under FDA guidelines. I researched and compiled a fifty-state law/policy database of treatment of federal Medicaid/Medicare payment mandates for dual eligibles. I produced bilingual synopses of Medicare's Low-Income Subsidy to increase public awareness, and I created an office quick-reference sheet on SSI income-deeming rules. I also conducted client intake in both English and Spanish. I was the lead contact on cases involving qualification for long-term care Medicaid, correction of SSDI records, and availability of CLASS program services.

I worked with clients on immigration issues including asylum and permanent residency. I advocated in court and administrative hearings before ICE and USCIS. I won an emergency stay of removal through successful petition of the BIA, changing the clinic's SOP in the process. I prepared DHS forms, motions, and briefs. I also had the opportunity to research traditional and novel theories of law, including the role of immigration laws in the criminal law system.
