I use sediments that collect at the bottom of lakes over thousands of years to understand past climate and environmental changes. These sediment archives contain fossilised micro-algae (diatoms) that have specialised habitat and water chemistry niches. By looking at the changes in the species of these algae through time, we can infer what the climate was like (e.g salty tolerant species = less rainfall/drier conditions). Current projects include working on the crater lakes of the Victorian Volcanic Plains and also local urban lakes and a small number of estuaries.
