Ik ben in juni 2020 met vroegpensioenregeling gegaan als klinisch fysicus. De vrijgekomen tijd gebruik ik om te varen op zee. Dit doe ik als stuurman bij zeilschip de Eendracht en bij zeesleepboot Holland. De laatste jaren heb ik mijn diploma’s en vaarbevoegdheid als stuurman zeilvaart en stuurman alle schepen behaald aan de Enkhuizer Zeevaartschool en de zeevaartschool op Urk (ROC Friesepoort). Ik ben begin jaren zeventig opgeleid als natuurkundige in de experimentele biofysica en ben daarna gepromoveerd op een onderwerp in de stralingsbiofysica. In de jaren daarna ben ik als universitair docent betrokken geweest bij onderwijs aan biologie studenten aan de universiteit. Het onderzoeksveld verschoof naar (ultra)snelle optische metingen aan energie overdrachtsprocessen in de fotosynthese. Na een postdoc onderzoeksperiode in noord Zweden ben ik in opleiding gegaan voor klinisch fysicus. Universitair onderzoek in die tijd was vaak eenzaam en erg competatief. Ik wilde iets "nuttigers" en meer in team verband. Als Klinisch Fysicus werk je als verbindingsofficier tussen arts en afdeling. Je helpt arts en afdeling bij de veilige inzet van steeds complexer wordende apparatuur. De afgelopen kwart eeuw heb ik gewerkt voor afdelingen Nucleaire Geneeskunde, Radiologie en Radiotherapie. Gemeenschappelijk is het gebruik van straling voor diagnostiek (medische beeldvorming) en voor therapie (gebruik straling om kanker te behandelen)
