About Ken Fischer

Ken Fischer is President Emeritus of the University Musical Society (UMS), having served in this position for 30 years between 1987-2017. UMS is an independent multi-disciplinary performing arts presenting organization founded in 1879 that is deeply integrated with the University of Michigan (U-M) in Ann Arbor. Each season UMS presents 60-90 performances, sponsors an extensive education program, commissions and presents new work, and hosts many artists’ residencies. On September 10, 2015, UMS received the National Medal of Arts from President Obama in a ceremony at The White House. Ken was honored to accept the medal, the highest award given by the U.S. government in the arts, on behalf of UMS. Since joining UMS in 1987, Ken has contributed to the arts presenting field as speaker, writer, consultant, and U.S. State Department cultural ambassador to Brazil, China, Lithuania, and Mexico. He serves or has served on the boards of Interlochen Arts Center, National Arts Strategies, Sphinx Organization, Association of Performing Arts Professionals, International Society for the Performing Arts, Chamber Music America, CultureSource, Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation, Ann Arbor SPARK, The Kings Singers Global Foundation, and Detroit's Concert of Colors. Ken has received ISPA’s Patrick Hayes Award, Arts Presenters’ Fan Taylor Award, and CMA's Richard J. Bogomolny Award for his career achievements and service to the field and the Mariam Noland Award for Nonprofit Leadership from the Community Foundation for Southeastern Michigan. He has also received a Distinguished Alumnus Award from The College of Wooster. Since retiring from UMS, Ken has been teaching Arts Leadership in the EXCEL program at U-M's School of Music, Theatre & Dance and mentoring U-M students and emerging arts leaders. Ken's memoir, "Everybody In, Nobody Out: Inspiring Community at Michigan's University Musical Society," was released in August 2020 and is available in bookstores, on Amazon, and through the publisher University of Michigan Press at https://bit.ly/3iIueDY.Before UMS Ken was a higher education association executive and management consultant in Washington, DC. Ken has degrees from The College of Wooster and University of Michigan. At Winter Commencement in December 2019 Ken was awarded an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Michigan. He is married to flutist Penelope Peterson Fischer, and their son Matt is former VP of Apple and Head of the Worldwide App Store. Matt and his wife Renee have two sons Alex and Reid.
