German Teacher
Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, I enjoy teaching both high school and middle school students here in the Pittsburgh area and genuinely love my job. My students are the best part of every work day, and I always strive to foster critical thinking, creativity, and a positive classroom environment. All of my students learn to communicate in the language and can speak spontaneously on a variety of questions, not only because this is good practice, but because it is also more engaging for them (particularly after so much virtual instruction where breakout rooms and Zooms were the best we had). Be it a German egg hunt outside, race games in the classroom, GimKit Among Us, or speed-dating speaking activities, my students have fun while engaging with the language and each other.
German Teacher
For the past four years, I have been an integral part of an innovative and rapidly growing German program. I remain extraordinarily passionate about my students and their learning while teaching all levels of German. This year, we also added AP German, for which I created the curriculum. The positive impact and relationships I have upon my students is intensely rewarding and, by far, the best part of teaching. Through working at Carolina Forest High School, I have also had the opportunity to collaborate other professionals; we have learned a great deal from one another and continuously work toward more realistic, hands-on methods in teaching our students the language and culture, as well as valuable life lessons. Especially now, our classes are an essential means of teaching open-mindedness and acceptance in an increasingly globalized society. Throughout this experience, I have gained a great deal of experience in presentation and engagement, classroom management, coaching, and club sponsorship. Furthermore, I have gained key skills in adaptability, innovation, creativity, reacting and reaching multiple decisions quickly, and interpersonal interactions that will transfer exceptionally well to a variety of situations.
Student Teacher
As a lead teacher one semester, educating students in German 2 and German 2 Honors classes (2 preps), I also designed curriculum materials in order to better align with the transition to the IB Program.
Summer Intern
As part of the MAC Program, I had the opportunity to teach in one-on-one and small-group settings in an 8th grade ELA classroom with 2-3 students, namely Lauryn, Wylandra and Kayana. During the month at Scarlett Middle School, a Title I school in Ann Arbor, I learned a great deal about building community within the classroom and school, teaching literacy strategies, and classroom management. In addition, the importance of interpersonal relationships, and the roles these play in motivating students, were made more evident.
Teaching Assistant
As part of one of my undergraduate German courses, I had the opportunity to assist a fifth grade teacher at the DSAA, where class was held approximately three Saturdays out of every month. --Planned and carried out a game/activity each class --Preparing students to take a test to return to the German school system
Undergraduate Admissions Office Assistant
Worked with incoming applications for LS&A in a team environment interacting with mail and organizing documents electronicallys into each student's file.
Tutor
As part of a course at U of M, I drove to Northville for three hours each week in order to tutor German I and German III students and offer help during individual/group work time during class.
Participant
As part of a summer language program (technically for high school and collge-aged learners to learn English), I helped to design and execute the Kinderfest (festival for children) with students from other countries. During this time, I not only acted as a translator from English to German and vice versa, but also worked the information and face-painting sections of the festival.
