Department Head / Director Of OperationsUs Navy Special Projects Patrol Squadron Two (Vpu-2) Dec 2011 - Dec 2013Operations Officer, Admin Officer, Director of Operations, Deployed Officer-In-Charge (OIC)As the Operations Officer / Director of Operations, I simultaneously coordinated aviation operations for 237 personnel in 4 Area of Operations around the world. I was responsible for a $7.5 million training, travel and operations budget that was executed with 99.5% accuracy from projections to actualization. I was fortunate have the latitude to innovate and made multiple efficiency improvements that led to better use of time and resources in the air both operationally and in training by using customized computer software tools.I also led the Wing Operations Working Group through planning and execution of all Wing Operations (4 squadrons) during a two month airfield closure. During this period of remote operations, we maintained 100% of our pilot training goals while operating with less aircraft from a remote field with more constraints. It was a great lesson in adapting to the environment while meeting requirements.

Division Officer / Section LeaderUss Ronald Reagan (Cvn-76) Jan 2008 - Mar 2009Yokosuka, JpAs the section lead (Electronic Warfare Division Officer) of 23 employees I was given an extraordinary opportunity to grow as a leader. Starting the job I was faced with multiple challenges. First of all, I was placed in charge of an group of individuals who had a completely different technical skill set and background than my own. I have heard it described as learned by firehose and I can't think of a better way to describe it. My employees had years of schooling, training and experience that I did not and they knew it. They were resentful of my placement over them and I had to prove my worth to them quickly. Second, the rest of the organization's leadership did not trust my team to be able to perform well in their critical roles and had established workarounds to avoid having to rely on my team before I arrived. It was a lot to overcome.I realized the problem was not bad employees. It was a bad reputation caused by a lack of specific training. I created a training program where each team member was given a specific area to study and master. They then shared their new found mastery with the rest of the team in a daily training session. As they gained confidence and mastery, I arranged training opportunities with the larger organization leadership to be head regularly using my team members as the lead trainers. Before long the workarounds were dropped and my team was trusted to perform their vital roles in the defense of the ship. I was awarded a Navy Commendation Medal half way through my time at the command in recognition of the transformation we had achieved. -
