About Keith Beisman

"If someone is going down the wrong road, he doesn’t need motivation to speed him up. He needs education to turn him around." Jim Rohn.I strongly believe that education is the main tool to keep people on the right road. After 20 years in the education field, I have come to realize that education is the main tool, but not the only tool, used to keep students and organizations on the right road. First as a teacher early in my career and more recently as an administrator, I have come to believe that if you provide information to an individual (or an organization) and then help them to assimilate that data, they will proceed down the path to success. As an administrator in the education field, it is my mission to understand and adopt the mission and vision of my school board and upper administration. Then it is my job to share that mission and vision with the staff that I work with. I must provide the educational team first the information and research, followed by the tools/supports to use this information. Finally allow them to monitor their successes and failures as they proceed down the "education road." Educators are professionals that when given the correct information, tools and guidance - will not only learn themselves but also empower students to do learn as well. "Tomorrow’s illiterate will not be the man who can’t read; he will be the man who has not learned how to learn.“ Herbert Gerjuoy

This grant allowed Morton to hire a Director of Instructional Technology and three Technology Coaches. Previous to this grant, Instructional Technology was a part of my administrative position. The other portion was Director of Science. Today as Director of Instructional Technology, I have the opportunity to continue movement the School Board's mission and vision forward - Every student succeeds - but my focus is primarily technology. The Instructional Technology team (three technology coaches and myself) function under the premise that technology is an additional tool that teachers may choose to use in the classroom. Technology is not a replacement for good teaching but rather an additional tool used by teachers. To this end, all Morton technology initiatives focus on allowing students (not the teachers) to COLLABORATE, COMMUNICATE and CREATE in the classroom. The three C's are increasing the level of engagement in classrooms which is leading to progress as students move toward mastery of standards. That mastery of basic standards is at the heart of the improvements on summative assessments and is the culmination of the School Board's vision - every student succeeds. In a nutshell, my responsibility at Morton is to work hand in hand with our Computer Services team (who handles the hardware side of the house) to ensure that students and teachers have the tools and training to use the technology. This has included Morton's 1:1 Initiative (currently in the first year of implementation), Technology Service Internship class, teacher professional development, device selection committee, professional development committee, software committee, liaison to the buildings for Computer Services and most importantly I serve on the Learning Support Service team as a Curriculum Director as we all work to put the School Board's vision into action - Every Student Succeeds. While I was still in the classroom, Morton had started it's Professional Learning Community voyage and enthusiasm had given away to confusion about the fundamental concepts of PLC's. I had the opportunity to transition from the classroom to administration just as the focus of the initiative started to change from teaching to learning. The PLT structure was in place but was shifting to answer these three questions: 1 - What do we want students to learn?2 - How do we know that each student has learned it?3 - How do we respond when students experience difficulty? To answer these questions, several initiatives have been implemented all culminating in the answer to these three questions. First, curriculum was aligned to CCSS and NGSS using the Understanding By Design framework. Secondly, common summative assessments were developed for each course and procedures were implemented to monitor those common summative assessments. Third, the shift to the use of a Standards Based Gradebook was made. Fourth, common course syllabi were developed to communicate this information to the families of the district. Today, Morton is focusing on addressing the final question - What do we do when students do not learn?Starting in 2012, I had the opportunity to work the the Learning Supports Systems team to implement the initiatives listed above. Each PLC learned through professional development, in-services, curriculum projects, workshops, conference, teacher evaluations and walkthroughs. I had the opportunity to focus on the Science PLC at the four campuses which included 54 teachers. Although my primary focus was and remains to enable the PLT's to answer the three questions above, there were MANY "other duties as assigned" from where I gained valuable experience. Show less

During the regular school year, Night School is in operation at our West campus. In June, Summer school runs with two sessions at our Freshmen campus. Both programs run independent of the regular school and function as their own entity within the Morton structure. With this in mind, NS and SS both hire their own staff (teacher, police, lead teacher/dean and clerical), runs registration, formulates schedules (teacher and student), issues grades, sets course prices based on budget analysis and culminates with a graduation ceremony. In addition, starting in 2010, NS/SS started offering classes in an online setting when enrollment was low for particular courses. NS and SS provided me the opportunity to grow as an administrator. Initially, I served for seven years as a NS and SS teacher. In August of 2009, I assumed additional responsibilities with the programs as Lead Teacher. In 2012, I took over the as Principal/Director until 2013 when I moved into the Instructional Technology role.NS generally had an enrollment of 550 students and SS approximately 1,300 each year. When I moved into administration in 2009, the program was functioning in the "red", experiencing large numbers of discipline challenges and was focusing singularly on credit recovery. (73% course completion rate) The team's first move was to collect data (surveys and grade analysis) to determine a course of action. Changes were quickly made to registration, scheduling and hiring procedures by focusing on using technologies that were already in the district. Soon thereafter, the disciplinary focus that had existed for many years was replaced with Positive Behavior Intervention Systems & enrichment programs were added. All of these changes together transformed Morton's NS and SS program into a place where student achievement was the primary goal (course completion rate 96%) coupled with accountability. Show less
