In the first two years of operation, I took Syndicate 1975 from an unknown start up, to a go-to lead medical liability market. COV1975 was the first and only stand-alone medical syndicate in the Lloyd’s market. During that period I built a balanced portfolio of circa £50m ($65m). The Syndicate offered capacity to Hospital, Physician, Long Term Care, Allied Medical, Life Science, Regulatory E&O and HMO E&O applicants. I was also integral in the development of new products designed to address emerging financial exposures resulting from the global shift towards “value based care” and capitated payments. The portfolio was predominantly domiciled in the US (circa 75%) with a focus on expanding the circa 25% non-US segment. The business was written on a direct, facultative, treaty reinsurance and delegated authority basis. The Syndicate also offered data analytics and risk management services, in an attempt to improve the risk profile and ultimate profitability of insured accounts. Additional responsibilities included all areas of business planning, actuarial model development, hiring and management of underwriting and claims team, reinsurance negotiation and purchase, managing internal/external audits, regular liaison with Lloyd’s especially during the business planning process, presenting to key brokers and senior management on the strategic direction of the Syndicate and responsibility for new products development and geographic expansion.

Ace Global markets became Chubb Global Markets in Jan 2016Appointed to the position of Senior Underwriter of Ace/Chubb Global Markets’ North American Professional Liability and Global Medical Liability accounts in 2007, having initially joined Ace in 2005. I was ultimately responsible for underwriting all classes of Professional Liability insurance and reinsurance, ranging from Medical Liability to Architects and Engineers E&O. The risks portfolio covered a wide range of different types of business and includes everything from Fortune 100 companies with global operations to small, prior submit binding authorities. During my time at Ace/Chubb, I was able to refine the portfolio into a core book of profitable clients who recognised the value of long term underwriting relationships, efficient claims handling and strongly rated capacity.

Senior Underwriter of the company’s North American Professional Liability accounts, consisting of all professional classes including: Architects and Engineers, Lawyers, Computer Consultants and other miscellaneous classes. All business, lead and follow, was underwritten on an excess basis and rated from ground up to ensure that an adequate technical rate was quoted for excess layers. Whilst at Liberty, I established guidelines and rating programmes for large architects and engineers and law firm business that were adopted globally by the Liberty group on a Centre of Excellence basis. My other responsibilities included emerging market trend analysis; the future proofing of legal landscapes; budgeting and the preparation of figures for reinsurance presentations.Alos spent 6 months working for LIU in New York.

Senior Underwriter of the North American Professional Liability and Employment Practice Liability accounts. The accounts were underwritten on a reinsurance and direct binding authority basis through tightly controlled, class specialist managing general agents in the United States. The main classes underwritten included law firms, architects and engineers, property managers, insurance agents/brokers, safety consultants, pension actuaries and employment practice liability.The running of the profitable account involved regular audits of clients to ensure adherence to rates and risk selection criteria and working with pricing and reserving actuaries to achieve an accurate view of the profitability of the book.

Underwriter in the Professional Indemnity Department with primary responsibility for large facultative accounts and binding authority business emanating from North America. Other responsibilities included the construction and review of contract documentation and the development of rating scales for facultative, fronted and direct risks. An important personal responsibility was the contact management of relationships with London brokers, US intermediaries and Managing General Agents. Spent 3 months working for a prominent MGA in Los Angeles.

Assistant Underwriter in the Professional Indemnity Department, responsible for all policy maintenance and record keeping, the processing of closings, management reporting and computer system development. The account consisted of both UK and US fortune-type accounts and binding authority/line slip business.
