I was asked to be the interim CEO for Health PEI ("HPEI") while they begin the search process for a permanent CEO. My focus, besides fulfilling the normal responsibilities and expectations of a CEO for a health region, will be to assess the current state of HPEI from a strategic perspective and, after discussion and consultation with the Board, implement the necessary changes to position the organization to be successful in achieving the expectations that are embodied in their recently released Three Year Strategic Plan. This assignment fits nicely into the next phase of my professional career. I had recently finished a 5 year contract as CEO for the Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region ("RQHR"). As my contract was ending, I had decided not to pursue further permanent senior leadership positions in health systems. Instead my focus for the next few years would be on providing strategic advice and support, primarily to organizations linked to health systems. I believe this would leverage my recent CEO experience at the RQHR and, prior to that, HPEI, in leading their successful evolution towards patient centred, quality and safety driven organizations that were addressing flow issues across the continuum with a particular success in improving the primary care system. I am at the stage of my career where I believe it is time for me to lead through supporting others and helping those leaders and their organizations be successful. And while I am no way suggesting my career has been as successful as that of Ray Dalio, founder of Bridgewater Associates, his observations and guidance detailed in his book Principles highly resonated with me. It is an interesting read.
