Principal Process Engineer
Team leader responsible for processing within the compound semiconductor plasma etch and the CVD technology groups. I managed a team of four engineers of various ability, balancing the needs of the various internal and external customers, as well as performing the work myself. The work consisted of the development of bespoke solutions, from the initial trials in the demo lab, to installing the equipment at the customer's site, worldwide. This also involved extensive report writing, analysis of data, and training customers (at both engineer and operator level). Customer interaction was an essential part of the role, both through conference calls and face to face. Liaison with the manufacturing, engineering, and sales teams was also necessary. In my last year at STS I was responsible for the process development on equipment sales worth over £2M. I was also heavily involved in the day-to-day operation of the application lab. This includes defining and purchasing equipment and I spend time training other engineers in the use of various equipment, as well as writing concise training manuals and operating guides for some of the equipment.

This involved the maintenance of processes using statistical process control (SPC) and the diagnosis and solution of process failures related to metallization. I gained knowledge of, and used, ‘Six Sigma’ quality techniques, such as FMEA and 8D approach to problems.The job required me to be able to function effectively within a high-pressure 24 hour manufacturing environment and to understand production requirements, tailoring solutions to maintain throughputs and manufacturability without compromising quality. Teamwork was an integral part of the job, working with manufacturing, maintenance and other process engineers. I was responsible for writing a number of training and operation manuals for the equipment, and the initial training of key staff on new equipment. During this time I also mentored two graduate engineers.
