My role at SkinSafe Cancer Clinic is to identify skin cancers as early as possible and prevent unnecessary pain and suffering due to sometimes devastating outcome of untreated skin cancer.

Had a great time working at EPSCC seeing patients from the Eyre Peninsula region. Full skin checks, spot checks, excisions, complex flaps and grafts - it was a one stop shop for skin cancer medicine in the beautiful town of Port Lincoln. The people of Eyre Peninsula had in general some serious disease burden - with farmers, oyster farmers, tradespersons, sailors, fisherman ---- these population groups had above average sun exposure and that was reflected in the number of cancers found.It was highly satisfying to find over 50 melanomas in 3 years with no cases of mortality. Furthermore, finding basal cell cancers in particularly high risk and cosmetically sensitive areas (such as around the eyes, the nose, the upper lip, the ears). Finding them when they are small leads to such better outcomes for patient and practitioner alike!

I worked on the Eyre Peninsula at a dedicated skin cancer clinic full time and had the pleasure of treating people in the region - we had a large catchment, and even were seeing patients from Western Australia! The UV exposure locals had experienced due to the industries and lifestyles in the region contributed to a very large disease burden - farmers, oyster farmers, fisherman, tradies, sailors... these people had higher than average sun exposure and we saw at the clinic over 100 melanomas in a 3 year period, many hundreds more basal cell cancers and squamous cell cancers on top of that. Fortunately, a majority of patients had great outcomes and that made the job so worthwhile.
