As a 4th generation Mechanical Engineer, I have always been a builder. For my entire life I have been improving the world around me through design, creation and organization. It was just second nature to me; something that seemed as natural and necessary as breathing or eating.It wasn't until I began working for Honeywell in 2012 that I recognized this trait to be the desirable behavior continuous improvement. As a young Mechanical Reliability Engineer with no prior experience working in chemical plants, I focused my desire to improve on that which was most familiar: mechanical systems. This focus ultimately resulted in improved reliability and a substantial increase in production capacity of our packaging department.After being promoted to a maintenance leadership role with direct reports, I realized that the most effective improvements to be made are not those that affect the physical equipment of the plant, but rather, those that affect the personnel. Improvements that enable others to be safer and more effective, reduce time spent on non-value-added tasks, and facilitate open and concise communication; these improvements were the ones that truly made a difference.Throughout my decade-long career in maintenance leadership I have made and implemented hundreds of process and system improvements, ranging from simple conveniences to multi-year, multi-million dollar expansion projects. I have overseen the development a maintenance department from the ground up, instructed and lead multiple technological-efficiency improvement projects, warehouse storage optimization, and major rotating equipment overhauls. Although the goals of my improvements are almost always rooted in improving the maintenance KPI's, the root causes that my efforts address often are not. This has resulted in a global mindset that has enabled me to be a more effective problem identifier, team leader, worker advocate and cross-departmental solution implementer.I don't know if there exists a perfect solution to a given problem, but I am certain that, with a given set of criteria, there always exists a least-flawed solution. I strive to identify and implement those least-flawed solutions, whatever the context or discipline.

Mechanical Integrity EngineerHoneywell Dec 2012 - PresentCharlotte, North Carolina, UsAfter several months of working on the expansion project, I was enlisted by the newly-formed reliability department at the same Baton Rouge site. My primary directive was the successful implementation of the asset performance management software, Meridium, but I accomplished many other things during that time, as well.Using Excel VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) I created a controlled spreadsheet that hosted all relief valve specifications. All changes made to the sheet were tracked within, making it possible to provide all employees with access. I also created an automated bad actors report for each our production units. I conducted a major survey of our plant's underground utilities. Starting with old maps and CAD drawings, I reconciled these with data acquired from a GPS survey crew and created a new, sub-meter accurate plant map. Camera inspections were conducted and integrity issues found were addressed.I lead the Meridium implementation effort, during which my team and I recovered over 100,000 historical ultrasonic thickness readings using Excel VBA automation, field verified and updated vessel drawings and specifications, amended thickness monitoring locations, and developed asset inspection strategies. I designed and implemented a 3-way valve system on our refrigerant jug-filling process that effectively increased our annual production capacity by $17.5 million.I successfully initiated a $1.3MM tank replacement project despite significant financial logistical resistance.I developed countless preventative maintenance plans and bills of materials; set equipment up in SAP, analyzed equipment failures with root cause analysis, and completed many projects using documented management of change processes. I have completed 4 dedicated weeks of six sigma black belt training and am currently working toward my certification with a portable rail car scale project that should significantly reduce material usage variances. -

Initial responsibilities included writing standard operating procedures (SOP), troubleshooting procedures, acquiring and organizing equipment documentation, and performing safety audits on the construction crews. I learned a lot about chemical plant processes, including management of change (MOC), PFDs and P&IDs, continuous improvement, 5S, process safety management (PSM) requirements, and quality assurance expectation. During this time I also became familiar with written and unwritten protocols of working in an unionized plant environment.I was trained and certified as an operator in our tank farm unit; learning how to load and unload refrigerants and raw materials from rail cars and tank trucks. I received my six sigma greenbelt certification when I utilized the tools to make inexpensive, yet effective, improvements to our refrigerant blending process. -

Drawing from his experiences in the service industry, we decided that our project would be an automated silverware wrapping machine. Engineering InternWallbedoutlet.Com Dec 2010 - Dec 2011I worked for Wallbed Outlet as an unpaid intern over Christmas break 2010, and again throughout the summer of 2011; working weekends and evenings when I was not at Douglas Corporation.When I was hired to work at Wallbed Outlet, I was originally tasked with rewriting the assembly instructions for their principal product: a flat-packed, assembly-required Murphy bed. After I completed this task (my first Standard Operating Procedure) I proceeded to make a video of the assembly process, as well.While completing these tasks, it became apparent that significant improvements could be made to the design in order to make assembly easier. After receiving permission, my redesigned Murphy bed utilized 50% less hardware, no longer required glue, was sturdier, and reduced assembly time by 2 hours. After the new design went into production I had to rewrite the assembly instructions and shoot a new assembly video.My final contribution to Wallbed Outlet was a design for a new piece of furniture: a convertible craft table. My convertible table (Conver-Table) design utilized hidden storages and collapsible surface to create an expansive work surface from a relatively unassuming piece of furniture. Although this design never went into production, many years later I built a variation of my original design to be used as a portable work bench.

Engineering InternDouglas Corporation May 2011 - Aug 2011As an engineering intern for Douglas Corporation, I was tasked with designing an automated, web-handling system that would be used to remove industrial-strength foam tape cuts from a roll and deposit them on a conveyor, where they were then retrieved by a vision-guided, six-axis robot and applied to the final product. I designed the piece of equipment using Pro/Engineer and MasterCAM design software. I learned how to source parts inexpensively from major suppliers and to work with vendors to find specialty materials. After my 3 month internship concluded, I had successfully designed a machine that was built and commissioned the following year. The machine I designed cost roughly $40,000 to build a pair; $160,000 less than the lowest out-of-house engineering firm bid. These machines are still in use today.
