January 2024 marks 64 years since I began work as a journalist in South Africa and 53 years since I arrived in Australia after migrating from the apartheid society. It is now almost 44 years since I began engagement with the energy sector as executive director of the upstream petroleum industry lobbying body (then APEA), 32 years since I became MD of the Electricity Supply Association of Australia and 19 years since I launched my Coolibah website and monthly newsletter, Coolibah Commentary -- which can be found at www.coolibahconsulting.com. I'm lucky at 81 to be able to keep busy with writing and to maintain my relationship with Quest Events, organisers of the Australian Domestic Gas Outlook conference and other energy events. My focus in the energy area remains on the governments of Australia pursuing efficient integration of energy supply and carbon abatement policies, which should be one of Australia's 10 national imperatives. We are now approaching a quarter century in Australia of a political imbroglio over how to meld meaningful reductions in greenhouse gas emissions with the social and economic imperative to have reliable and cost-effective energy supply. Leaving aside politicians jockeying for advantage, too much of the debate is still monopolised by vested interests. Current events continue to underscore the importance of resolving these issues, not least the need to make the eastern Australian electricity market fit for purpose.
