It was 1981 at the University of Oregon I took my first programming class, Business BASIC. I remember thinking wow, there are so many ways this could be applied to all aspects of business to improve productivity, accuracy, eliminating mundane tasks – the list was endless. I was hooked. Technology was in its infancy. No personal computers, no cell phones, even relational databases were taught as theory since they didn’t exist. Never could I have imaged the changes we are seeing today. My passion is the application of technology to improve business performance, help employees have more fulfilling careers, and personalize the customer experience. Most of latest technologies are in the early stages of mainstream adoption. Many will be the great disruptors of the next decade – better solar cells and batteries causing fewer fossil fuels to be burned; graph technology applied to large data sets to determine relations between nodes to create better understand and improve decision making; conversational AI making natural language common place in the customer experience; blockchain ensuring the legitimacy of digital signatures, protecting the confidentiality of patient data. It’s here at the intersection of disruptive technologies and the customer journey, using my experience, expertise and respect for the individual, that I hope improve lives both at work and at home.When not working, I enjoy spending time with my family, riding mountain bikes, creating live edge furniture, photography and cooking.

Data Warehouse/Bi ArchitectQualcomm Mar 2009 - Sep 2010The problem: the BREW mobile platform produces an average of 3.5 million transactions with a multi-million dollar financial impact each day. BREW data is accessed by product managers, accounting, finance and external customers for reporting and analysis. Each of these constituencies needs to see the data in a different way. The current “data warehouse” is ridged, slow and cannot support the many ways BREW data needs to be analyzed. The solution: design a flexible, multi-layered architecture to handle the large transaction volume, build in reconciliation processes to insure only accurate data is released to the fact and dimension data warehouse. All dimensions are required to be conforming since data from multiple source systems will be available in the data warehouse. The Qualcomm environment is Oracle 11G/10g multi-node RAC configuration, using Informatica for ETL, and Cognos’s BI, reporting and analytics solution.The BREW mobile platform ODS and data warehouse has been promoted to production and phase 2 of Qualcomm’s ODS/data warehouse architecture and development is now underway. Phase 2 will incorporate transactions from Qualcomm’s newest mobile platform, Plaza Retail Mobile Application Retail Solution. Plaza Retail has potential transaction volumes greater than 10 million per day. Using the same multi-layered architecture and conforming dimensions, the Plaza Retail transactions will be available for reporting and analysis sharing all common BREW dimensions and many new Plaza Retail specific dimensions. Development and QA for phase 2 is currently underway. -
