Joiner. Since leaving the Royal Navy I decided to take 2 part time jobs, mainly as a career break but also to attain some joinery skills to allow me to renovate my flat and my partner's home. I spent much of the summer last year working as a surfing instructor in my home town Saltburn on the East coast of England, clocking up over 200 hours of instruction, which I found very rewarding. My HSE skills immediately came to the fore in both these positions, reviewing the surf schools Health & Safety Policy and providing practical on site Health and Safety advice in the construction environment.

Northern Ireland, providing advice on a broad range of legal and disciplinary issues, organising Naval Courts-martial and acting as Clerk of the Court at Courts-martial. I was employed to assist the Naval Barrister for Scotland in the staffing of all legal documentation prior to its approval by the Admiral. Additional duties included being part of the Nuclear Accident Response Organisation (NARO), where once again my H&S and QA Internal Auditor skills and were utilised during training scenarios and the reviewing of procedures. October 2005 April 2006 - Chief Administrator/Mentor during a 6 month Operational tour in Iraq with the Naval Party based in Umm Qasr. I was responsible for training and mentoring the Iraqi Navy's personnel department. I was tasked with identifying the Iraqi Navy's administrative procedures with a view to improving them. I used my QA Internal Auditing skills to good effect and with the help of an interpreter I found this task very rewarding. I was also responsible for the co-ordination of ground convoys in an extremely precarious environment.

During this short time I was given temporary promotion to CPO to act as the Manager of a large Unit Personnel Office responsible for in excess of 2500 pay accounts and personnel records. Acting as Divisional Officer to 25 junior administrators where I was responsible for their training, development and welfare. I was also tasked with preparing the department for an inspection from HQ in Portsmouth. Chairing weekly meetings I tasked my junior managers to identify weak areas in the department and then put together a well structured plan to review all procedures to improve our overall performance. The department achieved a Good assessment at final inspection.

within the Unit Personnel Office responsible for circa 1000 pay and personnel records for both shore based personnel and submarine personnel, which included the control and checking of all documentation relating to pay, allowances and promotion prior to it's transmission to the central pay division in Portsmouth. Carrying out inspections of the personnel departments on all small ships based at HM Naval Base Clyde.
