For a decade I have managed Sycamore Adventure Playground in Dudley. Sycamore Adventure is a multi award winning adventure playground situated in an area of significant deprivation in North Dudley. The adventure playground aims to: • Provide a world class play setting for all children, with a particular focus on those facing disadvantage. • Be is graced by thousands of smiles, giggles and excited grins each year, impacting positively on children’s physical and emotional wellbeing. • Enhance childhood experiences and playfully prepare children for adult life. • Provide an outstanding play space; a dynamic Playwork team and a quality run service. This unique setting is an extremely well-used community resource which has received numerous national awards in recognition of the service provided, creating local pride in the service. • Provide a place where children’s play is prioritised, where all children can experience independence and where adults advocate children’s right to play. • Become a sustainable organisation generating the bulk of its financial needs through primary purpose trading. Sycamore Adventure saw 30,000 visits last year with up to 400 children playing here at one given time. The adventure playground is a beacon site for inclusive play with a high percentage of attendance from disabled children (16%), children from deprived backgrounds (43%) and looked after children (3%). A strong volunteering ethos has developed at the adventure playground with on average 60 hours of volunteering taking place on site each week. Outstanding feedback has been received regarding the service. The adventure playground has a 5 star website rating and 4.9 star Google rating with over 130 reviews and is rated number one for fun and games in Dudley on trip advisor. It is a much valued community resource and used by families across the Midlands.This has been my life for the past decade!
