- Designed scalable protocols that removed specific impurities from crude fermentation-grade 3-hydroxypropanoic acid (3HP) that dramatically improves further purification processing. - Provided multi-kilogram quantities of synthetic 3HP from beta-propiolactone that served as a screening tool for Strain Development and Fermentation efforts. - Provided several metabolism standards to AR&D that serve as activity markers for various enzymes in the pathway to 3HP and other bio-based products. - Evaluated product stability and impurity profiles that determined MoC studies. - Lead the effort to commercialize 3HP by preparing a 17-kg batch of bio-derived sodium salt at >99.5% purity with over ten potential customer samples delivered. - Championed the effort to commercialize various 3HP derivatives for alternate uses beyond acrylic acid that offer higher value. - Assisted in the build-out of the Process laboratory to meet the equipment needs of the team with realistic budget considerations. - Developed and wrote SOPs for equipment use and commonly used procedures. - Actively participates in the Safety Committee to find ways to prevent time loss/injury and helped acquire ACC Responsible Care certification (2012-2015). - Implemented a pay-for-service agreement for local (Boulder) NMR analysis to complete our analytical needs. - Assisted in the joint research efforts toward commercializing “bio-acrylic acid” with our former partner, Dow Chemical Company. - Worked with the Fermentation Group to determine co-solvent conditions that allow consistent sampling of fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) in aqueous media.
