Leadership coaching represents the pinnacle of my career’s work. I didn’t plan it, exactly, but as I look back, nudges and hints were routinely coming my way. As my career moved from learning the ropes at Memorial Sloan-Kettering, to being president and CEO of a well-regarded Massachusetts health system, on to helping lead and teach at the Sloan Program in Health Services Administration graduate program at Cornell University, and later working in health care governance and executive search, I put those pieces together and found my calling. Each step in my career has provided opportunities for personal growth and satisfaction from knowing that I had helped organizations move the needle toward being more successful. Sometimes it has been the result of working with a committed health care board trying to adapt. At other times it has been the resolution of a seemingly unsolvable organizational challenge. And — in the most rewarding times for me — it has been the experience of helping an individual who is grappling with workplace challenges and has a desire to change. My clients will tell you that I help them understand context and have a more accurate view of their organizations; that I leave them better able to handle political environments and with the skills to build healthier relationships. They know how they can and should influence their organizations.I am a coach, mentor, and teacher. That means delivering objective and sometimes tough messages, but with the end result being that my clients have the skills and insights they need to shape their future.I thrive at fixing messy situations. I try to picture circumstances and put myself in others’ shoes so we can problem solve — side-by-side -— those complex and dicey workplace issues that impact people on both a professional and personal level. By understanding the relationship between individuals and their organizations, I work to help people get the unproductive stuff out of the way and to move forward.
