Set up and managed a new drug discovery programme working with academic research units in France, Germany, Sweden, Spain and the UK. This was a highly innovative programme and the scientists involved included a future Nobel Prize winner and the head of an INSERM unit in France (the first time INSERM had entered into a collaboration with a non-French company). The programme resulted in several drug candidates entering Upjohn’s development pipeline.

Joined as Senior Analyst in Upjohn's European R&D laboratory. Took over as Mnager of the laboratory in 1971 and Director in 1982. Developed laboratory’s capabilities to undertake the full range of pre-clinical studies (formulation, drug delivery, bioanalysis, drug metabolism and toxicology) and early clinical investigations (Phase I and early Phase II) for the development of new chemical entities discovered by Upjohn or licensed in. The laboratory was also responsible for the manufacture of all Upjohn’s clinical trial supplies outside the USA and had widespread involvement in process development and technology transfer, working closely with Upjohn manufacturing units in the UK, Belgium, France, Italy, Australia and Japan. Project manager for a substantial building development (4,000m2) of laboratories, pilot facilities, warehousing and offices at the Crawley site, which was completed to time and on budget. Recipient of W E Upjohn Prize in 1986.
